β–ΆSummary

Current data suggests that physical activities are becoming more and more detached from typical sports facilities and there is a need to envisage the potential of public spaces for grassroots sports. In light of this, WHO and other bodies have recommended that the discipline of urban planning should consider the needs of the population in terms of physical activity. Furthermore, Covid-19 restrictions have depended the effect on the otherwise declining level of physical activity in Europe, and further reinforced the importance of public open spaces to provide opportunities for physical activity. With that in minds, we take Rebar’s Park(ing) Day concept where Parking spots are turned into temporary public Parks, social areas, etc., and transform it into the PARK(ing) Day for Fitness (PDF) programme as the gateway to being physically active in urban environments, and as a tool for adapting grassroots sport to current realities and evolving social needs. As part of the project framework, we will deliver 6-multisport events and + 90 pop-up fitness interventions as either a multisport celebration or gamified event using the principles of tactical urbanism. Through this project we aim to: ● Encouraging the practice of sport and physical activity among the general public by delivering Park(ing) Days for Fitness events across 6 countries, and physically move + 100, 000 people. ● Showing how low-cost, high-gain public space interventions can be a solution for providing opportunities for more physical activity in dense cities, as well as building the capacity of participating partners and their local network. ● We will share, communicate, advocate and disseminate the PDF activities and results to a wider European audience to ensure the effectiveness, sustainability, and long-term impact of the project.
