Summary

The Municipality of Ruse (BG), endowed with a number of beautiful parks and lakes, located on the bank of the Danube River, holding an active ecosystem of more than a hundred sport clubs on its territory and being a host of many sport events, has envisaged its vast potential and essential role to contribute to the achievement of the European twin transition agenda through leveraging the opportunities of the ERASMUS + Programme. Being in line with Erasmus + priorities to reduce pollution and mitigate climate change, Sports4GreenDeal main objective is to raise awareness on the role of community-based outdoor sport activities for enhancing physical and mental wellbeing as well as active citizenship and more environmentally responsible behaviour through developing digital tools, green competence and a roadmap for sustainable sport development involving citizens, athletes, students, coaches and leaders in the EU sport ecosystems, fitted to their needs and challenges in their green transformation and at the same time to act as a connector of sport organizations on a European scale, which share values and motivation for cleaner, healthier, greener, and more activity-friendly local environment. This unique project brings together a wide variety of partners across all parts of Europe, including: a national sport academy and a university, a ministry and a local government, sport federations and also grassroots outdoor sport clubs and an NGO/network for outdoor sports. The Sports4GreenDeal project will bring for attitudinal and behavioural changes among stakeholders towards an environmentally responsible participation in low carbon community-based outdoor sport activities while preserving the natural environment and reducing the environmental footprint. In the long run, the green transformation of the sport sector will create a meaningful change towards healthy and sustainable communities where we live and play.
