Summary

People with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) have low levels of health-promoting physical activity. This is due to several barriers to physical activity, including a lack of information, few programs tailored to the specific symptoms (e.g., fatigue and pain) of MS, and the need for transportation to the exercise facilities. The main objective of the 'Active and Mindful' project is to promote the health, well-being, and quality of life of PwMS through their participation in mind-body exercises. This project develops through two related activities: (i) delivering a mind-body online exercise program (synchronous) tailored to the participants' characteristics targeting physical and psychological functioning, and (ii) producing online open-exercise resources to be used by PwMS to exercise in their homes (asynchronous) according to their level of functionality. The consortium is composed of the University of Évora and two Associations for PwMS, namely Sociedade Portuguesa de Esclerose Múltipla (SPEM, Portugal) and Asociación de Familiares y Afectados de Esclerosis Múltiple de Burgos (AFAEM, Spain), stimulating the transference of scientific knowledge to community health measures that benefit PwMS. The 'Active and Mindful' project uses the advantages of digitalization: The exercise program will be delivered online, amplifying the number of PwMS that could be reached, and several mind-body exercise-related resources will be available online, including a portfolio of exercises (e.g., tai-chi, yoga, pilates, relaxation, and mindful exercises) accompanied by instructions and representative images, videos, and audio recordings. The multidisciplinary team of the project includes exercise and psychomotor specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, etc., which is fundamental for offering activities tailored to the participants' functional status. that is published through this page expresses the views of the project beneficiaries only and it does not represent the views of the European Union or the European Commission.
