Summary

The plague of addictions has worsened considerably since the Covid-19 pandemic, where traditional addictions like alcohol or drug consumption have been joined by modern digital addictions such as smartphone and internet abuse, online gambling, cybersex addiction and eating disorders. Addicted persons face a wide range of psychological and physical problems, living in conditions of physical inactivity and sedentary life often accompanied by excessive smoking. This aggravates the effects of dependency and greatly complicates recovery treatments. The RESTART project aims at promoting Rehabilitative Sport practice in therapeutic services for people suffering from traditional and modern digital addictions. Rehabilitative Sport consists of grassroots sport practice and physical activity training programmes to increase motivation, self-esteem, confidence building, boundary setting and eventually promote health and well-being in individuals undergoing addiction recovery treatments. Concretely connected with the EU “HealthyLifeStyle4All” initiative and fully aligned with the mission of the new EU Drugs agency which enters into force in 2024, RESTART will implement a cycle of 3 transnational workshops where the partners will exchange their expertise and good examples in promoting Rehabilitative Sports practice to better support the addicts in their recovery treatments and social inclusion. Beside the physical side of grassroots sports, coaches will deal with pain management to tolerate and manage both physical and emotional pain, to take on crisis and distress and avoid possible treatment interruption and relapse. RESTART consortium is made up of 5 partners from Spain, Italy, Portugal and Austria and includes a sport club for disadvantaged individuals. The project outputs are a Guideline on “Rehabilitative Sport training” programmes for addictions recovery treatment and an awareness raising Protocol on the benefits of physical activity within addiction treatment therapies. that is published through this page expresses the views of the project beneficiaries only and it does not represent the views of the European Union or the European Commission.
