Summary

In a world where the transformative power of sports is increasingly acknowledged, “Beyond Maps: Orienteering for Youth Development” seeks to spotlight the profound impact the lesser-known sport of orienteering has on young people. Beyond its role as a recreational activity, orienteering emerges as a unique and holistic sport, catering to the multifaceted needs of today's youth. It does this by addressing the importance of physical well-being, while also enhancing mental resilience and fostering social connections between people. This project aims to tackle the high rates of sedentary lifestyles, poor mental health and social isolation of youth in the countries Greece, Austria and Latvia. It aims to do this by making orienteering more popular and visible as well as by organising local and international training events and competitions in urban or forest areas in each partner country. This European collaboration consists of a research phase on the status of orienteering in each partner country, transnational meetings, a transnational training event held in Latvia where the basics of orienteering will be taught and practised amongst participants, three local competitive events in urban and rural landscapes, the production of a Beyond Maps Handbook, a website, three local multiplier workshops for youthworkers, coaches and teachers, consistent dissemination efforts to promote project results sustainably. The target groups of the project include young people of school age, young adults, youth workers, coaches, and teachers. A special focus will be placed upon unrepresented groups gaining accessibility in this project. that is published through this page expresses the views of the project beneficiaries only and it does not represent the views of the European Union or the European Commission.
