ROWACT - Rowing and Wellness through Active
▶Summary
ROWACT is a 24-month project designed to empower women over 50 by addressing their physical, social, and economic challenges through rowing and complementary activities. The project employs evidence-based practices, innovative digital tools, and community-focused initiatives to promote active aging and inclusivity. ROWACT targets several sub-groups of women including those with age-related physical challenges—such as reduced strength, flexibility, and balance—as well as women experiencing social isolation due to retirement, widowhood, or limited family interactions; those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds; women in rural or peripheral areas with limited access to sports facilities; participants with minimal sports experience; and women seeking enhanced mental and emotional well-being along with opportunities for lifelong learning and empowerment. To reach these groups, ROWACT collaborates with local rowing clubs in Italy, Portugal, and Slovenia, implements outreach campaigns in underserved areas, hosts open days and community events, and leverages testimonials from current participants to build trust and awareness. At its core, ROWACT is built on three pillars: Physical Health, Social Inclusion, and Capacity Building. Tailored training programs—starting with accessible non-competitive indoor rowing that gradually transitions to outdoor sessions—are designed to improve physical resilience, complemented by postural gymnastics and injury prevention strategies. Social Inclusion is fostered through group activities and community events that build connections and combat loneliness, while Capacity Building equips coaches and volunteers with specialized training and digital monitoring tools such as e-learning platforms and progress trackers to ensure continuous support. The project culminates in an international rowing regatta for women, a celebratory event that showcases achievements, facilitates cross-cultural exchange, and reinforces community bonds. that is published through this page expresses the views of the project beneficiaries only and it does not represent the views of the European Union or the European Commission.
