Summary

The European School Sport Day® (ESSD) is a major pan-European initiative promoting sport and health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA) among children and young people. As the largest event of the European Week of Sport (EWoS), it engages millions across 40+ countries, aiming to increase regular sports participation and dedicated physical activity time. Since its launch in 2015, ESSD has expanded yearly, reaching 3.2 million participants in 42 countries by 2024. Beyond promoting physical activity, ESSD fosters social inclusion by addressing annual focus topics. For 2026, under the theme "Step, Pedal, Move! - Active Mobility in Schools", the initiative will emphasize the benefits of walking, cycling, and other sustainable transport modes. Schools will be encouraged to integrate active transport into daily routines, organize related educational programs, and collaborate with external partners to promote long-term mobility habits. The goal is to inspire students and parents to adopt active transport, enhancing well-being while benefiting the environment and economy. ESSD2026 will be implemented with the support of six partner organizations, national coordinators from more than 40 countries, and thousands of volunteers, collectively raising awareness of the importance of health-promoting physical activity for future generations. that is published through this page expresses the views of the project beneficiaries only and it does not represent the views of the European Union or the European Commission.
