Summary

The "Relay of Heritage: Bridging Cultures, Nature, and Communities through Relay Running" is a transnational initiative integrating sport, cultural heritage, and environmental sustainability through relay running. Inspired by Holmenkollstafetten, it addresses physical inactivity, social fragmentation, and environmental neglect, promoting inclusion, teamwork, and cultural appreciation. The project pilots relay races in four Mediterranean cities—Serres and Alexandroupolis in Greece, Palermo in Italy, and Famalicão in Portugal. Each 18km route highlights historical landmarks and natural landscapes, engaging communities through educational workshops, cultural events, and sustainability initiatives. Participants will experience a unique blend of sport and heritage, reinforcing their connection to local history while fostering environmental consciousness. The initiative encourages active lifestyles by increasing participation in sport and physical well-being. It strengthens the preservation of cultural heritage by integrating historical sites and local traditions into the race experience. Sustainability is a core element, ensuring eco-friendly event practices and fostering environmental awareness. Social inclusion is a key objective, engaging diverse communities, including migrants, people with disabilities, and disadvantaged groups. By building bridges between sport, culture, and nature, the project enhances community cohesion and European cooperation. Expected results include increased community participation in physical activity, a stronger appreciation of shared cultural heritage, and greater environmental responsibility. Strengthening social connections through cross-cultural exchange, the project offers a replicable model for inclusive and sustainable relay events. The Relay of Heritage is designed to inspire long-term engagement in sport, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability while uniting diverse communities under a shared European identity. that is published through this page expresses the views of the project beneficiaries only and it does not represent the views of the European Union or the European Commission.
