EOLHSS - European Observatory on LGBTIQ+ Hate
▶Summary
Across the globe, discrimination against minority groups is on the rise. Hate speech against LGBTIQ+ individuals remains a persistent and harmful issue within the realm of sports, and despite some progress made in relation to promoting equality and inclusion, the sports world continues to witness discrimination, stigmatisation, harassment and violence directed at LGBTIQ+ individuals, at all levels in sport. Where laws and policies exist for sport in some European countries, their implementation seems to lack effectiveness, whilst in other countries, measures to tackle discrimination in sports do not explicitly address LGBTIQ+ people. Additionally, evidence indicates that initiatives aimed at addressing hate speech against LGBTIQ+ individuals in sports often suffer from being piecemeal, short-term, or limited in scope, resulting in insufficient progress toward creating inclusive sporting environments. This project will build on a collective body of well developed expertise across its partnership, consolidate knowledge and take the key steps required to build the foundations for the first European Observatory on LGBTIQ+ Hate Speech in Sport (EOLHSS). The project will be part of a larger long-term vision, but will in itself be a milestone in developing the safety and inclusion of LGBTIQ+ community in sport in Europe. The Observatory will establish a mechanism to monitor, analyse, and combat this problem effectively. Such an observatory can document incidents, track trends, and provide data-driven insights into how inclusion efforts are progressing—or where they are failing. In addition to collecting and analysing data and raising awareness about the scale and impact of hate speech, an Observatory can support individuals affected by hate speech, and promote accountability of sports institutions, clubs, governing bodies, and media outlets in their response to hate speech incidents. that is published through this page expresses the views of the project beneficiaries only and it does not represent the views of the European Union or the European Commission.
