Summary

Background We applied for this project to bridge the gap between traditional educational methods and the evolving learning preferences of today's youth. Recognizing the disconnect between current teaching approaches and the engaging learning styles of young individuals, we aimed to develop an innovative solution that resonates with their preferences. The project aimed to address the pressing need for contemporary educational tools that effectively engage and train users, particularly amidst challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the unpreparedness of youth work to adapt to remote learning. Our objective was to create a mobile app that enables an immersive, interactive detective story experience, promoting teamwork, communication skills, deduction, reading comprehension, information organization, critical thinking, and informal language learning. The project aimed to explore the potential of serious but accessible gaming to seamlessly integrate training content while fostering motivation, fun, and robust learning outcomes, crucial for youth integrations and engagement. What's more, we wanted to create an app that we ourselves would have liked to use during a variety of informal events, meetings, and training scenarios. Objectives Our project aimed to revolutionize youth education by creating a game-based learning app, focusing on soft skills, communication, and language acquisition. We intended to engage youths through an interactive detective-themed app, fostering skills like teamwork, deduction, and critical thinking. Simultaneously, our goal was to embed language learning seamlessly into gameplay, making it enjoyable for young learners. Beyond direct outcomes, we sought to enhance the expertise of project caretakers and developers, empowering them with innovative techniques and methodologies for future initiatives. Moreover, collaboration between our partner organizations aimed to create a dynamic synergy, opening avenues for future joint ventures and innovative solutions in the field of youth education. This project aspired not only to deliver a transformative app but also to fortify the capabilities of project contributors while fostering enduring collaborations for future educational advancements. Implementation Throughout our project, we strategically implemented activities to fulfill our objectives. Transnational meetings were crucial for brainstorming, knowledge exchange, and motivation, refining ideas and maintaining team enthusiasm. The Intellectual Outputs, a result of collective effort, encompassed foundational aspects like basic project assumptions, design documents, learning guidelines, evaluation methods, and the mobile application itself. Cloud-based solutions streamlined our work organization, knowledge management, and worktime optimization, enhancing collaboration. Gameplay sessions rigorously tested the app's functionality, validating its entertainment value and efficacy as a training tool. Additionally, we organized multiplier events to disseminate project outcomes widely, reaching NGOs and stakeholders across Europe. These events, serving as platforms for showcasing our results, maximized our impact within target communities. Achievements The project generated significant outcomes, notably the Language Detective mobile app featuring diverse criminal cases, language exercises, and thematic illustrations. Complementary to the app, the Language Detective Player handbook and Educator's Manual were created, as well as evaluation tools for app usability, according to the specific guidelines provided by experienced educators from the Goethe-Institut and IZI Ltd. Those supporting materials are essential for app comprehension and usage in all settings. Crucial project groundwork emerged from Main Concepts and Game Design Documents, including UI assets and translations. Additionally, many educational documents were made covering Informal and Non-formal Education Models, Key Aspects of Foreign Language Learning, and Digital Games as Educational Tools. Beyond these tangible results, implementers' skills in writing, organization, and development were significantly enhanced. The project also fostered a satisfied user base, integral to testing and disseminating the app's benefits.
