Climate Action with Gamification
▶Summary
Background We applied for this project to address the pressing need to combat climate change, especially among young people, and saw an opportunity to make a meaningful impact. As an organization committed to environmental sustainability and youth empowerment, we aimed to develop innovative game-based approaches to engage youth in climate change education. Additionally, we sought to provide comprehensive resources and training for youth workers, foster collaboration among organizations, and empower young people to take action on climate change. Through this project, we aimed to create a more cohesive and impactful approach to climate education, believing that collaboration across Europe would amplify our impact in building a sustainable future. Objectives Our project aimed to achieve several overarching objectives: increasing awareness about climate change causes, impacts, and solutions among youth workers, young people, and wider communities; equipping youth workers with the knowledge, skills, and resources for effective climate change education and activism; empowering young people to take action within their communities through workshops and practical activities; facilitating collaboration and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders involved in climate education and activism; and creating sustainable impact by building the capacity of youth workers and instilling a sense of responsibility for environmental sustainability. Our goal was to devise and implement game-based strategies that would effectively capture youth interest and spur action on climate change. Additionally, we identified a lack of accessible resources and training materials on climate change education for youth workers. Implementation We implemented a series of activities aimed at achieving our project objectives: Development of game-based educational materials: We created interactive card/board games, LEGO-Serious Play modules, and digital serious games to educate youth about climate change in engaging ways. Training sessions for youth workers: We conducted workshops and training sessions to equip youth workers with the knowledge and skills to effectively engage young people in climate change education using the developed materials. Youth workshops and events: We organized workshops and events where young people could actively participate in learning about climate change through interactive activities and games. Overall, these activities were designed to raise awareness, empower youth, and foster collaboration in addressing climate change. Achievements The project yielded several concrete outputs and results that contributed to its overall success. Firstly, we developed game-based educational materials, including interactive card/board games, LSP modules, and digital serious games, designed to engage youth in learning about climate change. These materials were effectively utilized in training sessions for youth workers, enhancing their capacity to engage young people in climate change education. Additionally, through workshops, events, and online training courses, we empowered young people to become active agents of change in addressing climate issues within their communities. Furthermore, the project fostered collaboration and knowledge-sharing among youth workers, organizations, and stakeholders involved in climate change education and activism. This collaborative approach facilitated the exchange of best practices and innovation. The project achieved its objectives of raising awareness, empowering youth, fostering collaboration, and creating sustainable impact in addressing climate change. By leveraging game-based approaches and collaborative efforts, we made significant strides towards building a more resilient and sustainable future.
