The outbreak of the coronavirus led to disruption, causing financial hardships for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Europe. While it was widely assumed that the pandemic's impact was more significant for small businesses, detailed information on the subject was limited. Insights from an ITC COVID-19 Business Impact Survey helped address this gap, confirming that the crisis had a more severe effect on small businesses. A majority (55%) of survey respondents noted strong impacts from the pandemic and related containment measures. Smaller companies were more significantly affected by COVID-19 compared to larger counterparts. Despite challenges, small businesses demonstrated resilience through their ability to adapt, innovate, and leverage their agility. The introduction of technologies allowed them to compete legitimately with businesses of any size. Looking beyond the crisis, adopting forward-thinking technologies became crucial for the new normal. This shift necessitated more flexible workspaces, especially in terms of remote working.
