MOOC pour le changement - Outil online de formation en SMCC
▶Summary
European forests are severely suffering from climate change and its consequences. The transition to resilient forest management practices must therefore be a priority. The principles of Continuous cover forestry (CCF) meet this priority. However, CCF faces 2 major obstacles : OBSTACLE 1 : RESISTANCE TO CHANGE : CCF involves changing traditional silvicultural practices and shakes up the cultural codes of the forestry sector, which is known to be conservative. >> NEED for objective, qualitative and exhaustive INFORMATION to help people understand the benefits, principles and objectives of CCF. OBSTACLE 2 : A LACK OF SKILLS due to : - A gap between supply and demand due to the absence of basic training in CCF, the low number of learning courses, and the lack of motivation among managers in light of the scale of the problems their forests are facing - Difficulty in accessing training courses for people who are rarely professionals, with few courses offered at suitable times and filed courses rarely accessible by public transport. >> NEED for CCF training using accessible tools.
▶Objectives
The general objective of the project was “to improve the level of information, knowledge and skills of forest managers and owners in the field of CCF in order to impact their practices for the benefit of a management adapted to the challenges of climate change”. This objective was divided in 2 specific objectives: 1. To inform about CCF and demonstrate its potential and usefulness to remove the obstacles to initiate the transition to CCF and to motivate forest managers. This objective has been pursued through an extensive communication campaign on CCF and the existence of the MOOC open to everybody. 2. Provide managers/owners with the necessary tools to start CCF by creating the first massive open online course (Mooc) in CCF within the EU. This trilingual (FR, DE, EN) online training course, from the field to the learner, targeted the training of a minimum of 10.000 people.
▶Activities
The project contained 3 WP and their activities : WP 1: MOOC It consisted in 6 activities: - Structuring content of the 8 chapters - Development 103 training materials (64 planned) - Translation into 3 languages (EN, FR, DE) of all materials - Development of the online tool - 2 sessions of the MOOC, 8 weeks each, 36 live sessions to exchange with the learners (16 sessions planned) - Certificate of participation - Involvement charter WP2 2: COMMUNICATION As the Mooc is communication tool, the communication campaign aimed at ensuring its dissemination to maximise the impact of the project and raise awareness for CCF. This module was composed of 3 activities : - Communication plan - Campaign to raise awareness on CCF - Mooc dissemination campaign WP 3: PROJECT MANAGEMENT Managing an e-learning project comprising 103 trilingual training material, with 4 international partners, in 2 year’s time was a challenge. This has been possible thanks to a project management module based on 3 activities: - web tools (project management application, file sharing, videomeeting tools) - Thematic working groups - Evaluation of results.
▶Impact
The results are as follows : 1. MOOC : At the heart of the project, the triningual Mooc in CCF was created. This onling training course contains 103 trilingual (FR, DE, EN) training supports (which is 39 more than planned) : - 71 training videos (32 planned) - 8 pedagogical documents - 8 guides for exercises to do in the field - 8 quizzes - 8 “for more information” sections In addition to those supports, 36 live sessions were organized during the 2 Mooc disseminsation sessions to ensure exchange with participants and answer questions. These sessions were recorded and integrated into the Mooc. A personal commitment charter was proposed to learners and a certificate of participation was delivered to those who completed the entire course and obtained a score of at least 70% in the quizzes. To date, 13.508 learners have been trained,2.635 of whom have obtained a certificate at the end of the course. 2. COMMUNICATION The communication campaign (more than 30.000 people) was organized with: - 2 videos raising awareness on CCF and promoting the Mooc - 1 webinar on CCF “From policy to practice” for 370 participants - 4 multiplier events (1/country) for a total of 435 participants - 83 media relays - social network activation
