Summary

Experts estimate that illiteracy affects approximately 1 in 10 adults in Belgium and France, 5% in Luxembourg, and 12-15% in Germany and Austria. This affects both natives (e.g., people with cogni...

Objectives

The project aims to empower people experiencing illiteracy. Becoming familiar with authentic documents from a country that may not be your own (host country) is important. First, it's about being able to differentiate between document types: an advertisement, an invoice, an official summons, etc., and within the document, understanding where important information is located and what is incidental. Gaining autonomy to understand these different elements is very important: not systematically depending on a public service, an association, or relatives is an essential step in each person's emancipation and self-esteem. In fact, it's the feeling of being a full citizen in Europe that is reinforced by the implementation of the project. Ultimately, this project will contribute to the fight against illiteracy in German- and French-speaking countries and regions of the EU. Specifically, the objective was to reach 200 teachers and trainers, as well as 150 learners during the project, and then to have the opportunity to disseminate the results far beyond the six partners making up the consortium.

Activities

During the 3-year project: - 7 transnational meetings - Working group meetings + videoconferences - Multiplier events: 1 in Belgium and 3 in Germany, including a videoconference with foreign participants The focus was the creation of a brand new educational tool, adapted to the needs of people experiencing illiteracy. This tool, called LILL'APP, is available in 2 versions (French and German), is completely free and accessible to anyone. The consortium first defined 15 types of real-life situations where reading and writing are essential : it became the themes of the exercises created. Ex: housing, banks, administrations, etc. The partners defined the variety of exercises: reading comprehension via MCQ and various adapted exercises, listening comprehension via image selection following audio instructions, sorting and categorizing, fill-in-the-blank texts, etc. The 'Pleasure of Reading' section was defined in terms of its objectives and methodology. This was an important contribution of the project: not only focusing on learning, but also (re-)instilling a love of reading. A skills framework was created with the aim of easily visualizing the difficulty levels of the exercises. A presentation video allows teachers to get started.

Impact

The website, very easy to find: lill'app on Google, 1st result = lillapp.eu. - More than 200 exercises, each containing an average of 3 to 5 questions, all available in the 2 project languages, marked with a difficulty level, from 1 to 3 stars. For sheets including exercises of progressive difficulty: the indication is then, for ex, 'Level 2, 3,' and it the number of stars mark the highest level of difficulty. - A common skills framework, based on three skills: listening, reading, and writing. It has three levels. It is defined in the 'Compétences' tab of the lillapp.eu website (French version). - The Pleasure of Reading section is loosely inspired by 'choose your own adventure' books. Thus readers are active - The web platform was developed based on discussions that took place throughout the project: during transnational meetings, but also during email exchanges with trainers who were in the process of creating or testing the exercises. - A 10-minute presentation video was produced. It is a guide covering the project's objectives, teaching methods, and practical instructions, easily accessible on YouTube: by searching for 'lill'app,' it's the first result. The German subtitles automatically provided by YouTube have been verified.
