▶Objectives
The project aimed to enrich sustainability education by integrating a critical socio-economic perspective into the curriculum. Our objective was to challenge the traditional focus on individual actions and incorporate an examination of economic and political structures that impact sustainability. We sought to provide both educators and students with a more comprehensive understanding of sustainability, covering both micro and macro perspectives. This included: -Enhanced Teacher Training: Develop resources and programs to equip teachers with the tools needed to address both individual and systemic aspects of sustainability. -Development of Educational Materials: Create practical resources to support a holistic approach to sustainability education. -Promotion of Alternative Economic Models: Explore models like Post-Growth Economics to encourage critical thinking about the limitations of growth-oriented capitalism. -Fostering Critical Thinking: Enable students to analyze economic policies and sustainability, and propose solutions that balance economic growth with sustainable development. By achieving these objectives, we aimed to foster a more informed and engaged approach to sustainability among students.
▶Activities
The EcoGreen project involved a series of well-structured activities designed to meet our objectives and address the identified needs. These activities were aimed at providing com-prehensive support to educators and students, ensuring the effective integration of a critical socio-economic perspective into sustainability education. Development of Educational Materials: We created a range of resources, including a didac-tically sound handbook, podcasts from Germany, Poland, Austria, and Finland, and practical teaching units. These materials addressed topics such as sustainable development goals, green cities, and alternative economic models, providing teachers with tools for effective classroom instruction. Extensive Pilot-Testing of Materials: To ensure the effectiveness and relevance of the educational materials, we conducted comprehensive testing in schools across Germany, Poland, and Fin-land. This testing aimed to evaluate the materials in real classroom settings, gather feedback from educators and students, and make necessary improvements based on their experiences. This iterative process helped refine the materials and ensured they met the needs of diverse educational contexts. Teacher Training Workshops: We organized workshops and self-learning opportunities fo-cused on critical socio-economic education. These sessions were designed to enhance teach-ers' understanding of sustainability and equip them with strategies to incorporate these con-cepts into their teaching practices. Learning, Teaching, and Training Activities (LTTAs): Several LTTA events were conducted, including a significant session in Savonlinna, Finland. Participants engaged in lectures, workshops, and field trips related to sustainable development and green economy, gaining hands-on experience and fostering exchange among educators. Partnership Meetings: We held regular meetings with project partners in locations such as Brunswick, Savonlinna, and Vienna. These meetings facilitated collaboration, progress re-view, and the refinement of project outputs, ensuring alignment with project objectives. Dissemination and Multiplier Events: To maximize the impact and reach of the project, numerous dissemination and multiplier events were organized at schools and with experts across Europe. These events provided platforms for sharing the project's findings, showcasing the developed materials, and engaging a broader audience in discussions about sustainability. They were crucial in amplifying the project's reach and ensuring its relevance to a wide range of educational contexts. Through these activities, we aimed to equip educators with the resources and training needed to effectively teach sustainability from a critical socio-economic perspective and to engage students in meaningful discussions about alternative economic models and sustainable development.
▶Impact
The project has generated several key outputs that significantly contribute to sus-tainability education and the professional development of educators: Result 1: Handbook and Podcasts We created a comprehensive handbook and podcasts featuring contributions from Germany, Poland, Austria, and Finland. The handbook covers essential sustainability concepts, didactic strategies, and practical guidelines, providing educators with a robust foundation for teaching sustainable development. Result 2: Teaching Materials and Best Practices This result includes a diverse array of teaching materials such as lesson plans, presenta-tions, and guiding documents on topics like Sustainable Development Goal 8, green cit-ies, and green entrepreneurship. Additionally, we compiled best practices from several European countries, offering practical examples of green economy and sustainability in education. Result 3: Blended Learning Course - Professional Development for Educators with Self-Learning Materials We designed a two-day workshop and accompanying online self-learning modules to ad-dress the significant need for professional development in sustainable education. The training focuses on equipping educators with the skills to teach sustainable economic policies and practices. The materials cover various aspects of sustainability, including marketing strategies and lobbying, and are intended to enhance teachers' ability to guide students in becoming informed, responsible consumers and citizens. The workshop was followed by a flexible online course, allowing for extended learning and application. Result 4: Interactive Online Platform The project established an online platform that serves as a comprehensive follow-up re-source for educators and students. This platform allows participants to upload and share their work, network, and engage in or initiate events and presentations. It features re-sources from the training courses, including recorded lectures and materials for contin-ued professional development. The platform supports ongoing interaction and collabora-tion, enabling educators and students to participate actively and stay informed about the project's developments. It also serves as a tool for maintaining the project's impact and visibility, fostering international collaboration, and supporting the sustainability of the project's outcomes. These results collectively advance the goals of the EcoGreen project by enhancing sustaina-bility education, providing valuable resources for educators, and fostering a collaborative environment for continuous learning and professional development.
