e-WBL@HoME: Adapting WBL to the post-covid era

The project e-WBL@Home addressed critical challenges faced by vocational education and training (VET) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The disruption highlighted the urgent need to ensure continuity in work-based learning (WBL), as many VET learners risked delayed graduations and missed training opportunities. Additionally, traditional WBL placements were declining due to financial constraints, administrative burdens, and skill shortages, particularly among SMEs. The goal was to adapt to these challenges by developing virtual WBL programs that not only maintain but enhance learning experiences for students while providing added value to employers. The project also aimed to eliminate geographical barriers, ensure access to placements, and create resources to support employers new to WBL schemes. Furthermore, e-WBL@Home sought to upskill VET teachers, trainers, and leaders to engage businesses effectively and transition to virtual WBL, addressing the long-term needs of the VET ecosystem.

The primary objective of the eWBL@HoME project was to re-think work-based learning (WBL) by creating a solid framework to transform traditional VET schemes into high-quality virtual WBL experiences. The partners aimed to achieve several additional objectives, including increasing the visibility and attractiveness of virtual WBL through a standardized, high-quality framework. Each organisation of the consortium sought to actively support employers in revaluing WBL and encouraging them to offer virtual placements for VET learners. Another goal was to expand learning opportunities for VET learners, enabling them to complete their practical training in virtual settings without compromising the quality of their experience. Lastly, the partners aimed to upskill teachers, mentors, and tutors to effectively support virtual WBL, from its design and implementation to the successful completion of placements.
