Creating School Seismology Labs For the Development of Students’ Competences
▶Summary
The SEISMOLAB project presents a unique and innovative approach to integrating seismology in educational environments. The interest in this project stems from a combination of a passion for science education, a desire to enhance student engagement through hands-on learning, and a commitment to promoting STEM literacy among young students. This project responds to the need for innovative teaching tools and methodologies, responding directly to the "Environment" and "Prevention and protection from natural disasters" theme. The reasons for creating this project were the growing demand for quality education to prepare students for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; the promotion of hands-on learning, as well as the connection between theory and practice. Students learn about seismic waves and earthquake mechanics and get to see these concepts in action, enhancing their comprehension and retention of scientific principles.
▶Objectives
The implementation objectives of the SEISMOLAB project are as follows: 1. Educational Enhancement: Inspiring Interest in Earth Sciences. This sparked curiosity and interest in earth sciences, especially seismology, among students at various educational levels. 2. Improving scientific literacy: Enhancing general scientific literacy by providing students with hands-on experience and real-world applications of seismological concepts. 3. Professional Development for Educators: Equipping educators with innovative tools and resources to effectively teach seismology improves science education quality. 4. Research progress - Promoting Collaboration: The students came into contact with the research stage, collected and analyzed seismological data, and contributed to a wider scientific understanding of seismic activity. 5. Development of Educational Materials: Development and dissemination of high-quality educational materials that can be used in classrooms and informal learning environments. 6. Expansion of the school seismograph network both in partner countries and schools of the OTHNESCO network Through the implementation of the SEISMOLAB project, a substantial impact has been achieved on the educational community.
▶Activities
A1: This framework includes five templates for designing the project demonstrators. A2: A set of SEISMO-Lab demonstrator training scenarios is created. A3: The partners organized training seminars with hands-on workshops for STEM teachers in each country. A4: Teachers implement the suggested activities and accompanying hardware/software platforms in their classrooms. A5: The installation of the 100 school seismographs was completed. A6: The qualitative and quantitative impacts of the project on teachers and students were assessed. The final evaluation tools were as follows: 1. The Schools' Report 2. The Teachers' Questionnaire 3. Teachers' report, 4. The Pupils' Questionnaire. A7: The main objective was to effectively manage the project to ensure the timely delivery of project results within the budget. Although there was a delay in the start of the project as NA informed the coordinator of the project approval in May 2022, but the final start date was February 28, 2022, the consortium managed to deliver three high-quality deliverables on time before the end of 2022 A8; the results of the project were disseminated through channels to educational authorities at the local, regional, and national levels. All guides are available thro
