Summary

The 2020 marked a turning point, witnessing global movements like Black Lives Matter and Black Trans Lives Matter, along with the Virtual Day of Silence supporting the LGBT+ community. Amidst the COVID crisis, gender inequality and challenges faced by disabled individuals worsened. EUqualizer aimed to address stereotypes, targeting educational institutions and organizations. We focused on the LGBT+ community, gender inequality, disability, and racism.Research revealed high levels of racist discrimination in the EU labor market and housing sector. Disability statistics showed barriers to participation in society equally. Gender inequality persisted, with women underrepresented in the labor market and facing an 11.7% employment gap and 14.1% pay gap. The situation for the LGBT+ community was challenging, evidenced by a rise in abuse and hate speech. Our objectives aimed to address these issues, starting with comprehensive research across European countries on the four focus areas. We then created an awareness campaign, including a website collaboration, social media impact, local activities, and recognition of the International Day Against Stereotypes. Finally, we developed a toolkit for discussions in formal and non-formal education.

Objectives

Our objectives involved combatting stereotypes and addressing systemic challenges faced by marginalized groups, such as the LGBT+ community, individuals with disabilities, victims of racism, and those affected by gender inequality. Through thorough research, we aimed to understand these issues across European countries. Our central strategy focused on developing a robust awareness campaign to engage diverse audiences. Utilizing digital platforms and local events, we aimed to spark meaningful conversations about stereotypes and discrimination, challenging ingrained prejudices. Recognizing the importance of providing tangible resources, we created educational materials tailored to formal and non-formal settings. These resources, including discussion guides and multimedia presentations, aimed to equip educators to engage learners in critical conversations about inclusivity. Our overarching goal was to effect lasting change in societal attitudes and behaviors by dismantling stereotypes and promoting empathy. Through collaborative efforts, we aimed to create a more equitable and inclusive society, where diversity is celebrated as a strength.

Activities

In selecting and involving participants in the various activities of our project, we adopted a strategic approach to ensure inclusivity and effectiveness. Here's a brief overview: Research: Participants were selected based on their expertise and experience in the areas of discrimination and social justice. Partner organizations conducted comprehensive research across European countries to understand the extent of discrimination experienced by marginalized groups. Staff and associated partners from each organization were involved in data collection and analysis, ensuring thorough and accurate research outcomes. Awareness Campaign: Participants in the awareness campaign were identified from diverse backgrounds, including community members, educators, policymakers, and advocates. The campaign utilized various channels, such as online platforms and local events, to engage these audiences in meaningful conversations about stereotypes and discrimination. Partner organizations collaborated with the direct and indirect target group to broaden the campaign's reach and impact, ensuring representation from different sectors and communities. Educational Materials: For the creation of educational materials, participants included educators, trainers, and facilitators working in formal and non-formal educational settings. These individuals were selected for their expertise in delivering inclusive and engaging learning experiences. The materials, including discussion guides and multimedia presentations, were designed to be accessible and informative, catering to diverse learning needs and preferences. MOOC Content Development: Stakeholders involved in developing MOOC content included subject matter experts, educators, and technology specialists. Collaborative efforts were undertaken to create engaging and informative course modules covering topics related to stereotypes and discrimination. The content was designed to be accessible on digital platforms, ensuring widespread dissemination and uptake among learners from diverse backgrounds. Overall, our approach to selecting and involving participants in project activities prioritized inclusivity, expertise, and collaboration. By leveraging the knowledge and skills of diverse stakeholders, we aimed to foster meaningful dialogue, challenge stereotypes, and promote equality and inclusivity across European communities.

Impact

Research Report: A comprehensive report was produced detailing the extent of discrimination faced by marginalized groups across European countries. This report serves as a valuable resource for understanding the challenges and informing future initiatives aimed at addressing discrimination. Online Awareness Campaign: A five-month-long online awareness campaign was successfully conducted, in which each month was dedicated to focusing on a specific project topic (stereotypes, LGBTQ+ issues, disability, racism, and gender equality). Through engaging blog posts, social media content, and digital outreach efforts, we raised awareness, challenged stereotypes, and promoted inclusivity. Local Events: Three or four to four local events were organized in each partner country, including Italy, Turkey, Spain, Malta, and Finland. These events provided valuable opportunities for community engagement, dialogue, and collaboration on addressing discrimination and promoting equality. International Day Against Stereotypes Petition: A petition was initiated to establish an international day against stereotypes. This initiative aimed to garner support and raise awareness on a global scale about the harmful impacts of stereotypes and the importance of combating discrimination. MOOC Course Development: A comprehensive MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) was developed, consisting of five modules covering stereotypes, LGBTQ+ issues, disability, racism, and gender equality. This course provides accessible and informative educational content aimed at fostering understanding and promoting dialogue on these important social issues.
