Summary

The project 'Simulations of pleadings before the European Court of Human Rights' made it possible to make the participants (learners and trainers) aware of the European Convention on Human Rights ...

Objectives

At all stages of the project, the students were in the position of actors to identify discrimination in the practical cases proposed to the students. How, on the basis of discrimination concretely identified in a judgment of a national court, after exhaustion of all domestic remedies in the country, the European citizen can refer the matter to the European Court of Human Rights to assert his rights. Written legal texts are not symbolic or fixed and students must know them, master them and put them into practice as European citizens.

Activities

The student 'apprentice lawyers' discovered the ECHR's major tool for the protection of fundamental rights and used it to defend either an applicant who was a victim of discrimination or a State accused of not having respected the principle of non-discrimination in the form of a mock pleading competition organised before a court in each participating country and finally before the real court represented by the European Court of Justice in Strasbourg.

Impact

Written and oral arguments contained in a final booklet Educational activities around the different forms of discrimination addressed Educational kit for learners and trainers on human rights in Europe.
