Summary

In the current context of climate crisis, and socio-economic instability, tourism faces unprecedented challenges. A paradigm shift is needed to re-think the way tourism activities are planned and ...

Objectives

The general objective of Nudge My Tour was to contribute to a better management of tourism flows and to a more effective planning of tourism destinations/experiences, in a post-Covid tourism recovery and beyond, through innovative methods based on behavioural science and the Nudge theory. The specific objectives were the following: - Raise the awareness of professionals working on tourism planning and management about the potential of the Nudge theory to positively influence the behaviour of tourists in a destination, towards the prevention of some of the negative effects of Overtourism, and equip them with practical tools; - Build & test innovative pedagogic tools to illustrate how behavioural insights can be applied to tourism flows management - Share examples of Nudges applied to tourism

Activities

In the Nudge My Tour project we carried out the following activities: The Nudge My Tour partners have co-developed pedagogic and awareness raising tools about the application of Nudging and behavioural science to the management of tourism flows. These tools are: 1) a Training Methodology aimed for current and future professionals in tourism planning and destination management, which covers the fundamentals of tourism sustainability and applied behavioural science (Annex 1); 2) an Informative Toolkit that visually explains the key topics addressed in the methodology (Annex 2); 3) a Compilation of nudges and other behavioural interventions applied to tourism (Annex 3). The five project partners that carry out training, higher education and lifelong learning have tested the Training Methodology within their pedagogic activities. Based on the feedback from testing, the partners have revised the pedagogic tools. The testing sessions allowed to transfer the knowledge about behavioural approaches applied to tourism to 120+ professionals and university students in five cities. A transnational Training of Trainers has been carried out in Paris, where a selected group of staff from the participating organisations learned how to use the three Project Results in their respective pedagogic activities, and beyond. Several dissemination events allowed to involve stakeholders from the tourism sector, to share with them the pedagogic tools co-produced with Nudge My Tour and, more importantly, to discuss the relevance of applying behavioural approaches to tourism sustainability, and the importance of sharing knowledge about human behaviour. CROSS-CUTTING ACTIVITIES: Project Management; Monitoring and Evaluation of project’s activities, results and impacts; Communication & Dissemination.

Impact

In the Nudge My Tour project we achieved the following concrete outputs: Firstly, we co-developed three pedagogic tools about the application of behavioural approaches to tourism sustainability: - A Training Methodology about the application of behavioural science to tourism sustainability, addressed to trainers and teachers who work in the tourism field, and who provide training and capacity building to tourism planning and destination management professionals, and to university (Master) students in tourism/destination management, tourism planning, destination marketing, etc. - An Informative Toolkit comprising 14 infographics that provide a visual summary of the key topics of behavioural science applied to tourism sustainability, also addressed in the Training Methodology. They are designed to be self-explanatory, but also to be integrated in the training courses when using the methodology. - 4 animated videos that are also part of the Informative Toolkit, that aim to bring the infographics to life, illustrating some of the key concepts of tourism sustainability, decision-making, nudging, and the application of the knowledge of human behaviour in tourism. - A Compilation of nudges and other behavioural interventions, which provides concrete examples of how the behavioural approach can be successfully applied to tackle a tourism sustainability-related challenge. Other important results have been achieved thanks to this project: - In general, this project allowed to set the stage on the topic of nudges applied to tourism sustainability, that was until now relatively unexplored. Nudge My Tour created a momentum, and the enabling environment for other initiatives that go in the same direction of using knowledge of human behaviour in sustainable tourism. - The team from the seven participating organisations directly involved in the project gained in-depth knowledge of the principles of tourism sustainability, behavioural science and nudging. They will now become ambassadors of the application of behavioural science within their own organization and beyond. - 120+ students and practitioners in the field of tourism planning and destination management have received training on the topic of applied behavioural science, and are now sensitized about the relevance of behavioural approaches when it comes to managing a destination more sustainably - All partners have committed to keep using the pedagogic tools co-developed in their respective pedagogic activities, and in general to the keep working on the topic of applied behavioural science. - Among them, at least three have integrated in their curriculum a training course about behavioural sience and nudging applied to tourism, which will use the Nudge My Tour methodology, toolkit and compilation as pedagogic tools.
