The project aimed to introduce upcycling as a valuable educational tool, inspiring sustainable practices and fostering creativity among educators and students. It sought to provide accessible resources, develop a regional network of educators and stakeholders, and create training opportunities to ensure the concept’s long-term integration into school systems. Additionally, it aimed to raise awareness about the environmental and creative benefits of upcycling at local, national, and international levels.

The Upcycling Education project was initiated to address the growing need for sustainable education practices and environmental awareness in schools across Europe. Upcycling, a concept with limited awareness outside kindergartens in Iceland, offered an innovative way to foster creativity, sustainability, and practical learning. The project sought to equip educators and students with tools and methodologies to integrate upcycling into their curricula, addressing gaps in eco-conscious education and encouraging active community engagement.

The project produced a range of tangible outputs and results. These included a conceptual framework, blended course materials, and a Recommendations Guide, all made accessible as interactive flipbooks. A robust series of webinars and training sessions equipped educators with the skills and knowledge to implement upcycling in their teaching. Dissemination efforts reached thousands through social media, newsletters, and events, significantly raising awareness of upcycling. In Iceland, the project strengthened regional networks by bringing together schools, cultural organisations, and local businesses. It empowered educators and students, fostering creativity and eco-conscious practices that will have a lasting impact on education systems. The project successfully achieved its goals, leaving a legacy of sustainable education practices and a network of engaged stakeholders across Europe.
