European Mobility Career Counseling
▶Summary

▶Objectives
The project set out to accomplish three primary objectives: 1. Raise awareness of the psychological dimensions of job mobility among both individuals and career counsellors. This involves recognizing the factors that can either encourage or hinder someone’s decision to work abroad, as well as influence the overall success of that move. 2. Provide a comprehensive foundation in career counseling, with special attention to job mobility, to professionals who offer guidance services within their broader roles but have never received formal training in career development, ensuring more reliable and informed support for those considering or already living a work opportunity abroad. 3. Offer a specialized training course on international job mobility to already-trained career counsellors seeking to upskill and focus on cross-border placements, deepen their expertise in guiding individuals through the unique challenges and benefits of working overseas. Overall, the project recognized that psychological factors play a crucial role in shaping people’s mobility choices and in determining their effectiveness. By training both new and experienced practitioners, it boosted the quality and reach of mobility-focused career counseling.
▶Activities
The project was structured around three core activities, each of them designed to deepen understanding of mobility choices and provide effective training to those who guide individuals through international career transitions. 1. QUALITATIVE RESEARCH (AToM and WoMSA Studies). The first activity involved a two-part qualitative study conducted in four European countries. The AToM (Attitude Toward Moving) Study, using individual interviews and focus groups, explored the underlying reasons for mobility choices and the competencies needed for a successful experience. From this research, five main areas were identified as key influences on job mobility: Motivation, Skills, Satisfaction, Needs, and Preconditions. Building on these findings, the project conducted the WoMSA (Work Mobility Skills and Attitude) Study, focusing on three of the five areas, Motivation, Skills, and Satisfaction, to create an innovative tool for assessing attitudes and skills related to international mobility. Meanwhile, the remaining two areas, Needs and Preconditions, were considered to develop specific protocols that examine the essential foundations for well-informed choices during a guidance interview. 2. FIRST ONLINE COURSE (MOOC) FOR UNTRAINED PROFESSIONALS. The second project activity consisted of designing, implementing, and testing a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in career counseling. Targeted at untrained operators and professionals already offering guidance within their broader roles, this course delivers a broad yet solid foundation in career counseling principles, relationship dynamics, and practical tools. Throughout, it maintains a clear focus on international job mobility, ensuring participants gain both fundamental and mobility-specific insights. 3. SECOND ONLINE COURSE (MOOC) FOR EXPERT CAREER COUNSELLORS. The third project activity involved creating and testing a second MOOC specifically addressing international mobility issues. Tailored to trained career counsellors seeking to enhance their expertise, this advanced course tackles common stereotypes, promotes greater multicultural awareness, and delves deeper into mobility-related challenges. All course materials and research protocols were developed by a diverse group of experts from multiple European countries and varied disciplines. This approach enriched the project with a wide range of perspectives, like psychology, education, sociology, economy, career development, and cultural studies, and ensured that the resulting tools and training programs reflect the full complexity of international work mobility.
▶Impact
To tackle the complexities of international job mobility, our project generated both in-depth research findings and practical resources for professionals and individuals seeking cross-border career opportunities. From qualitative studies on the psychological underpinnings of relocating abroad to specialized online courses in career counseling, these outputs were carefully designed to improve guidance practices and help people make informed decisions about working in different countries. Below is an overview of the project’s most significant results and how they collectively foster more successful and fulfilling mobility experiences. PROJECT RESEARCH OUTPUTS. The project’s research activities resulted in four key resources: 1. Final Report. A Qualitative Study on the Successes and Failures of Moving Abroad for Work, available in English and Italian. This publication examines the motivations, challenges, and outcomes of individuals who relocate for work. 2. WoMSA Scale. An online psychometric tool offered in five languages (English, Italian, Spanish, French, and German). On completion, respondents receive an automatic, personalized profile that highlights their attitudes and skills related to international mobility. 3. WoMSA Scale Guidelines. A companion document that explains how to administer the WoMSA Scale effectively. These guidelines ensure accurate interpretation and application of the results in various counseling contexts. 4. Needs and Preconditions Protocols. Two structured protocols designed to help counselors explore clients’ needs and preconditions during career guidance sessions, thus facilitating more tailored and successful mobility decisions. MOOC1 – COUNSELING FOR THE LABOUR MARKET. The first training output is a 30-hour Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in English, created for career and employment guidance practitioners—whether formally trained or offering guidance within a broader professional role. This course is particularly relevant for those supporting individuals with migration or mobility backgrounds or people seeking opportunities abroad. Divided into five main topics (each consisting of five learning units), MOOC1 covers: Building Trust and Cooperation; The Career Counseling Process; Client Features; Client Career Management; Maintaining and Developing Employability. Through these themes, participants gain a solid foundation in career counseling, with an emphasis on navigating international mobility. MOOC2 – ADVISING FOR INTERNATIONAL JOB MOBILITY. The second 30-hour MOOC targets experienced career counsellors looking to broaden their expertise in cross-border employment. By addressing common stereotypes, developing multicultural awareness, and enhancing guidance techniques, this course helps practitioners support clients more effectively. It is divided into six main topics (broken down into various learning units) focused on the following four topics: Why Job Mobility; Diversity Awareness; Mobility Competences; Feeling at Home Each course combines on-demand videos (subtitled in five languages), written materials, quizzes, and downloadable resources. Upon completing at least one topic, learners automatically receive a Certificate of Attendance that outlines their learning outcomes and scores. This flexible structure allows participants to study at their own pace and gain valuable insights into career counseling and international mobility.
