How much warmer is one degree? Sensitise and empower low-level educated citizens, refugees and migrants in tackling climate change and global warming

The climate change is an urgent challenge affecting not only the planet as a whole but also our partner countries directly. Italy faces increasingly frequent and devastating floods, Greece is struggling with more intense wildfires every year, and in Austria, the accelerated melting of glaciers is impacting water resources and tourism. In Europe, climate change has become a daily reality, with extreme weather events and the need for mitigation strategies being constant topics of discussion. Addressing this crisis requires action at all levels of society, from individuals to educators, policymakers, and businesses. While many online resources exist to educate people about climate change, most are designed for users with a medium or high educational level. They often do not consider the needs of those with lower literacy levels, including migrants and refugees who may have limited proficiency in the host country's language. Many of these individuals come from backgrounds where environmental awareness and sustainability have not traditionally been part of the culture. The OneDegree project was created to fill this gap. Our goal is to develop accessible and inclusive educational tools that make climate education understandable to all.

The OneDegree project aimed to develop simple and engaging educational materials to raise awareness about climate change among adults, particularly those with a migration background or limited language skills in their host country. By focusing on the key question "How much warmer is one degree?", the project sought to highlight the impact of climate change on both the environment and daily life. To ensure wide accessibility, the materials are available on an interactive web portal and a mobile app, allowing users to explore content in a flexible and personalized way. Available in Italian, English, Greek and German, with Result1 also translated into Arabic, the project ensures that climate literacy reaches as many people as possible. Beyond content creation, the project facilitated transnational meetings and public events, fostering dialogue and knowledge exchange among educators and communities across different countries. A crucial goal was also to combat misinformation on climate change, ensuring that reliable, scientifically backed information is freely available to counter fake news and misconceptions. OneDegree empowers individuals to make informed decisions and actively contribute to climate action.

The implementation of the OneDegree project was carried out through a combination of online meetings and four in-person meetings, ensuring effective management and continuous collaboration among partners. In the initial phases, internal project management tools were created, including a dedicated mailing list, an online repository for sharing materials, a GANTT chart for activity planning, a Partnership Agreement, and a Project Abstract. At the same time, the project's visual identity was developed, featuring a logo and communication materials, including the official website, an informational flyer, and three multilingual newsletters distributed at different stages of the project. The core of OneDegree was, of course, the development of project outputs, including the Educational Kit, the E-learning Course for Teachers, the Handbook, the Interactive Web Platform, and the Mobile App. Each product was designed with a strong focus on accessibility and usability, ensuring that they could be effectively used by audiences with varying education levels and language skills. Once the materials were completed, a validation phase was conducted, involving selected target groups to assess the effectiveness and comprehensibility of the content. Finally, the dissemination phase took place through multiplier events in partner countries, aimed at spreading the project's results, encouraging their adoption by educators, trainers, and interested citizens, and ensuring the project's sustainability for the future.

The OneDegree project has produced a series of concrete and tangible results, aimed at improving access to climate change education and promoting sustainable practices. Main Project Results 1. OneDegree Educational Kit: An introductory educational package designed to raise awareness among adults, particularly those with low education levels or a migration background, about the causes and consequences of climate change. The material is available in Italian, English, Greek, German and Arabic. 2. OneDegree E-Learning Course for Teachers: A training course designed for educators and trainers in adult education, providing methodologies and materials to integrate climate topics into teaching. The collection includes 60 activities, ranging from short and simple exercises to more elaborate projects, covering various school subjects, such as social sciences, geography, foreign languages, history, psychology, mathematics, economics, biology, chemistry, physics, and art. The course is accessible on the web platform and is SCORM 2 compliant, ensuring compatibility with different e-learning systems. 3. OneDegree Handbook: An educational and training manual that explores key climate change concepts in simple and accessible language. It provides practical examples and tools to help individuals understand and reduce their environmental impact, covering topics such as sustainable mobility, ecological footprint, household energy consumption, sustainable housing, food waste, and responsible shopping. 4. OneDegree Web Portal: An interactive web portal (https://onedegreeplatform.com/) that gathers all project materials, including the educational kit, e-learning course, and handbook. The platform is available in four languages, offers a user-friendly interface, and includes a podcast page and a video section to enhance learning. 5. OneDegree Mobile Application: An Android application, available for free download from the Google Play Store, enabling access to all project content directly from smartphones and tablets. The app enhances mobility and flexibility in learning, allowing users to access materials anytime and anywhere. Additional Achievements Beyond the educational products, the project developed management and dissemination tools to ensure the success of its activities: 6. The consortium decided to merge the Monitoring reports and the Evaluation report into a single document for the following reasons: combining the monitoring reports and the evaluation report into a single document ensures a coherent and comprehensive overview of the project's progress, challenges, and achievements. This integration enhances efficiency, reduces redundancy, and provides a clearer narrative of the project's impact.
