▶Objectives
The GIFTED project aimed to address the EU Council’s strategic priorities by enhancing the quality, equity, and inclusivity of education, particularly for gifted and talented (G&T) students, who often remain unrecognized and unsupported in traditional classrooms. The objective was to empower teachers with the skills, knowledge, and tools needed to identify and support G&T students, including those from underserved or twice-exceptional backgrounds. Through a transnational, collaborative approach involving partners from four EU countries and the UAE, the project developed an innovative game-based training program. This program promotes experiential learning, engages teachers in real-world classroom scenarios, and fosters their motivation, commitment, and use of digital tools. By implementing this project, GIFTED sought to bridge gaps in teacher training, provide strategies for inclusive and differentiated instruction, and equip educators to nurture the academic potential and socio-emotional well-being of all students, ensuring fair and equitable access to education.
▶Activities
The GIFTED project addressed a critical gap in European education: equipping teachers with the skills to identify and support gifted and talented (G&T) students effectively. In 1994, the Council of Europe recognized the unique needs of G&T students, urging member states to implement measures for their early identification and support. However, many countries, including those in the GIFTED consortium, lack formal teacher training programs addressing these needs, leaving G&T students—especially twice-exceptional learners and those from underserved backgrounds—unrecognized and unsupported. This gap often leads to disengagement, underachievement, and psychological distress. Teachers, feeling unprepared, frequently rely on stereotypes, further marginalizing these students. The GIFTED project bridged this gap by creating an innovative gamified training program and a serious game to enhance teachers’ competencies. These tools help educators identify G&T students, understand their profiles, and implement inclusive strategies in diverse classrooms. GIFTED promotes equitable practices, ensuring all students, also the gifted, can reach their potential and thrive academically and in their overall well-being.
▶Impact
The GIFTED project successfully delivered four core project results (PRs), each contributing to the identification and support of gifted and talented (G&T) students and advancing teacher professional development. These outputs were designed for sustainability, inclusivity, and scalability, trying to ensure their long-term impact across consortium countries and beyond. PR1: The Serious Game GIFTED is an innovative game-based assessment tool designed to assist teachers in identifying G&T students, particularly in logical-mathematical reasoning. The game promotes inclusivity through cooperative gameplay, where all students collaborate toward a shared class score, shifting the focus from individual competition to collective achievement. Adaptive difficulty mechanisms ensure personalized engagement, while embedded self-perception questions provide insights into socio-emotional skills. Teachers receive detailed reports that guide personalized instructional strategies. Prioritizing data safety, the game operates on a dedicated server, anonymizes student data, and requires parental consent. Piloted with over 1,000 students, the game demonstrated effectiveness and adaptability in diverse educational contexts, making it a valuable resource globally. PR2: The Gamified Training Platform and Program is an open-access, asynchronous learning environment tailored to enhance teachers’ competencies in G&T education. Integrating gamification principles, it offers a dynamic learning experience with storytelling, progress tracking, and interactive activities. The platform includes five training modules aligned with the Training Manual (PR3) and supports personalized learning through an initial assessment. Features such as digital portfolios, forums, and a glossary foster collaboration and engagement. Available in six languages, the platform was extensively piloted, with feedback informing refinements. Its seamless integration with PR1 and PR3 ensures a comprehensive ecosystem for teacher training. PR3: The Training Manual (TM) provides theoretical and practical guidelines for understanding, identifying, and supporting G&T students. Organized into five chapters, it covers critical aspects such as giftedness traits, socio-emotional needs, inclusive assessment strategies, whole-school approaches, and best practices for instruction. The TM’s hypertextual structure enables interactive, non-linear navigation, supported by links to external resources and materials integrated within PR2. Available in consortium languages, the TM bridges theory and practice, empowering teachers to apply inclusive strategies effectively. Its free e-book version ensures broad dissemination and accessibility. PR4: The Open Badge System validates teachers' competencies gained through the GIFTED program. Aligned with the EU’s focus on modular micro-credentials, it offers standardized digital certifications embedded with metadata detailing skills and issuing institutions. Teachers can share badges on professional platforms like LinkedIn, enhancing their visibility and career prospects. Integrated into university programs across consortium countries, the OB system ensures the program’s sustainability and broad adoption in higher education.
