Media Education- a Challenge to Overcome

The MECO project had 3 main objectives. • OS1 focused on enhancing the skills of 25 educators, enabling them to better support adult learners, promote critical thinking, and foster personal responsibility. • OS2 aimed to provide 150 adults with access to media education learning tools to develop critical thinking abilities. • OS3 aimed to strengthen the capacity of 10 representatives of adult equipping them with new training tools and materials to effectively support their target group, leading to the provision of personalized, high-quality learning opportunities. The project was driven by the increasing integration of media and digital transformation as well as the challenges related to online safety and cyber hygiene. The COVID-19 pandemic emphasized the significance of digital skills in various aspects of life To assist adult educators and learners in adjusting to the shifting educational environment brought on by COVID-19, MECO partners undertook a needs analysis. The main objective was to empower adult learners and educators to successfully navigate in the multimedia environment by promoting media literacy education, critical thinking, and digital skills.

The MECO project implementation encompassed five phases to achieve its objectives effectively: 1. Phase 1: Management and Coordination. In this phase, clear project management rules were established, ensuring good communication among all partners. A comprehensive Workplan and work procedures were developed to guide the project's progress. This phase included 2 F2F TPMs at the beginning and end of the project as well as regular online meetings to ensures smooth running of the project. 2. Phase 2: Design, Development & Capacity Building. During this phase, the project outputs were designed and developed collaboratively by all partners. The outputs included: • PR1: Focused on addressing essential needs of educators supporting adult learners with fewer opportunities. • PR2: Involved the creation of the MECO TOOLKIT. • PR3: Developed the MECO PLATFORM. • PR4: Introduced the MECO Competence Assessment Tool. Also, this phase included the training of 10 specislists to use the materials developed in their organisations as well as train other adult educators. 3. Phase 3: Pilot Testing and Fine-Tuning. The project outputs underwent internal and external testing in each partner country. More than 100 adult trainers were involved in providing feedback on the project results (outputs). Based on the testing results, fine-tuning and improvements were made to all outputs to ensure their effectiveness. 4. Phase 4: Promotion, Dissemination, and Exploitation Activities. Throughout the project's duration, activities were carried out to promote and disseminate the project results as part of the Promotion and Dissemination Plan. The focus was on integrating the project results into training programs of partners and making the results accessible to different stakeholders. Main channels of dissemination: EPALE, social media, websites, other projects‘ meetings, etc. Also, partners organised MEs in their countries reaching more than 150 stakeholders + a virtual project results' presentation event with 41 participant. 5. Phase 5: Quality Control, Monitoring, and Evaluation. This phase emphasized maintaining robust quality management and continuous improvement through regular evaluation. An internal quality board was established to assess project activities, outputs, and communication between partners. External adult educators, trainers were approached to make the outputs developed correspond to their actual needs. The project's Quality & Evaluation Plan included evaluation indicators, tools, and criteria to assess the project's progress and impact effectively.

During the implementation of the "MECO" project, concrete outputs and results were achieved, contributing to the improvement of media education and digital skills among adult educators and learners. The project produced both tangible and intangible outcomes that foster positive change and sustainable impact. 1. Intangible results: • Increased capabilities of 25 educators in using the modern digital learning environment, critical thinking, and media literacy. • Improved knowledge of 11 educators through participation in Learning, Teaching, Training Activities (LTTA), gaining practical experience and valuable feedback. • Enhanced knowledge of at least 150 adults about a conscious approach to media usage. • Positive and long-lasting effects on participating organizations and individuals. • Extended professional network of partners at the national level through engagement with adult organizations, educators, facilitators, and policymakers. 2. Tangible results: • PR1 "MECO- Essential Needs of Educators to Support Adult Learners with Fewer Opportunities": Comprehensive needs analysis report identifying educators' needs and methods to encourage lifelong learning and social engagement. • PR2 "MECO TOOLKIT": Training material to guide adult educators in developing critical thinking and recognizing fraudulent web use. • PR3 "MECO PLATFORM": E-learning platform for efficient and equal access to quality education for all. • PR4 "MECO Competence Assessment (incl. User’s guide)“: ICT tool for Competence Assessment to identify specific needs and skills required to improve for effective educational support for adult learners. • 1 LTTA, 2 TPMs organised, MEs with more than 150 participants, 40 virtual participants in a separate online event, 5 newsletters, project website (https://mecoproject.eu/), more than 150 involved in piloting processes, interviews, training. The successful implementation of these outputs and results significantly contributed to enhancing media education and digital skills, providing valuable tools and materials for educators and learners in various sectors.
