▶Objectives
The project aimed to reduce youth substance abuse by fostering healthier educational settings through intervention, prevention, and professional collaboration. Objectives were adapted based on the initial evaluation feedback: 1. To enhance teachers' understanding of substance abuse among youth, enabling them to differentiate between substance dependence, abuse, and addiction, and to recognize signs of substance abuse effectively 2. To equip teachers with the tools and resources needed to address substance abuse in educational settings, enabling proactive intervention and support for students facing substance abuse challenges. 3. To enhance teachers’ understanding of evidence-based prevention strategies for substance abuse, thus enabling them to implement proactive measures aimed at preventing substance abuse among students. 4. To educate teachers about substance abuse impacts at personal, peer, family, and societal levels via a guidebook outlining social and psychological symptoms, enhancing their understanding and response. 5. To establish an international network of professionals, fostering collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and dissemination of best practices, thereby enhancing responses at regional and international levels.
▶Activities
The activities aimed to empower and equip teachers with the tools to create healthier learning environments, supporting both academic success and personal development for students: 1.Establishing teams, developing manuals, setting up communication tools, and implementing financial monitoring facilitated effective project implementation, ensuring that resources were allocated efficiently to achieve project objectives. 2.The project developed a reference handbook, 4 supportive videos, 2 guidebooks, and an online toolkit to support teachers in recognizing, preventing, and addressing substance abuse among students. These materials were informed by desk research, advisory board feedback, and translation into national languages, ensuring accessibility and relevance for educators across different contexts. 3.Creating an international network of professionals working in the field of substance abuse facilitated collaboration, knowledge exchange, and dissemination of best practices, enhancing responses at regional and international levels and fostering a community of support for educators. 4.Conducting pilot testing of the developed educational materials and resources in school settings allowed for the assessment of their effectiveness and gathering feedback from teachers and students. This feedback informed further refinement of the materials, ensuring their practical relevance and usability in educational settings. 5.The creation of an online platform to host educational resources, toolkits, and training materials for teachers enabled easy access and dissemination of resources, enhancing their reach and impact beyond the immediate project scope. 6.Arranging 7 multipliers facilitated teacher training, the presentation of developed resources, knowledge-sharing and networking among educators, school directors, therapists, psychologists, and other stakeholders. These events provided opportunities for capacity building, collaboration, and the exchange of best practices, ultimately strengthening efforts to address substance abuse in educational settings
▶Impact
The project has produced several concrete outputs and results aimed at addressing substance abuse among youth and supporting teachers in prevention and intervention efforts. These outputs included: 1. Reference Handbook for Substance Abuse A detailed handbook was created to provide practical guidance for teachers and school staff, covering information on substance dependence, abuse, and addiction, along with prevention and intervention strategies. The handbook was developed through comprehensive desk research, which complements the handbook, offering insights into national substance abuse strategies, implementation efforts, treatment demands, and legal aspects as well as offering insights into good practices and areas for improvement across seven European countries. 2. Educational Supportive Videos The project produced four educational videos aimed at providing practical guidance and resources for teachers to address substance abuse effectively within educational settings. These videos were designed to inspire and engage teachers in implementing learning activities related to substance abuse prevention and intervention. Each video covered specific topics pertinent to the understanding and management of substance abuse issues: - Video 1 provides insights into the health and social responses necessary for addressing substance abuse problems among students. It highlights the importance of recognizing and responding to the physical and psychological impacts of substance abuse, as well as the social consequences for individuals and communities. - Video 2 offers practical strategies and approaches for teachers to prevent substance abuse among students. It emphasizes the role of educators in creating supportive and nurturing environments that promote healthy behaviours and discourage substance use. - Video 3 presents real stories of young individuals affected by substance abuse, providing a candid look at the realities and consequences of drug use. By sharing personal experiences, the video aims to raise awareness and foster empathy among teachers, empowering them to support students facing similar challenges. - Video 4 showcases effective educational tools and resources available to teachers for mitigating substance abuse in school settings. It introduces evidence-based approaches, innovative programs, and best practices for implementing comprehensive substance abuse prevention and intervention initiatives. 3. Guidebooks on Psychological and Social Symptoms Two separate guidebooks were developed to provide practical tips and strategies for identifying and addressing substance abuse issues in school environments. While the guidebooks focus on defining symptoms of abuse, they are separated to cater to different aspects of teacher training and intervention. One guidebook focuses on psychological symptoms, while the other emphasizes social symptoms, providing educators with a comprehensive understanding of the signs to look out for in students. 4. Preventive Substance Abuse Education Online Toolkit An online toolkit was created to support teachers in delivering substance abuse prevention education in schools, including lesson plans, educational materials, and interactive resources for use in primary, secondary, and high school settings. 5. Project Management Tools and Communication Strategy A project management manual, online communication tools, and communication strategy were developed to facilitate collaboration and coordination among project partners, ensuring effective project implementation and communication. 6. Dissemination and Sustainability Strategies Strategies for dissemination and sustainability were developed to ensure the long-term impact of the project, including the creation of a multilingual website, dissemination materials, and a sustainability plan to continue the project's efforts beyond its duration. 7. Quality Assurance and Evaluation Reports Quality assurance measures, including checklists and quality reports, were implemented throughout the project to maintain the quality of outputs and outcomes. 4 evaluation reports were produced to assess the effectiveness of project activities and outcomes, providing valuable insights for future initiatives. 8. Stakeholder Engagement The advisory board was established to gather feedback and input from stakeholders, including educators, health professionals, and policymakers, on each result of the project. Regular partner meetings online were conducted to ensure collaboration and coordination among project partners, fostering a supportive environment for achieving project goals.
