▶Objectives
The Climatopia project, rooted in Environmental and Sustainable Development (ESD), focused on four key educational pillars: Learning to Know: It aimed to enhance students' understanding of climate science through engaging tools like comics and games, establishing a solid knowledge base. Learning to Do: The project emphasized applying this knowledge in simulations that mimic real-life challenges, encouraging active problem-solving. Learning to Be: Climatopia fostered personal growth and environmental responsibility among learners through immersive and reflective activities. Learning to Live Together: It promoted empathy and teamwork by having learners explore different perspectives, emphasizing the collective effort needed to tackle environmental issues. Hence, the main achievement and goal of the Climatopia project was to incorporate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) principles into school curriculum and practical settings, as it helps students think smarter, care more, and take action to make the world a better place.
▶Activities
Climate change calls for global action, especially in Europe. The European Green Deal aims to make Europe a sustainable, green economy by 2050, with no net emissions and inclusive growth. Educational institutions are key, as UNESCO noted, in teaching the community about climate action, understanding its impacts, and promoting sustainable lifestyles. The Climatopia project was central to these goals. It used engaging stories (Comic Methodology) and activities to make climate education interactive and at the same time practical, aligning with the Green Deal's vision for a sustainable future. Climatopia made climate science accessible, linking theory with daily life and encouraging eco-friendly choices. Through interactive methods like comics and games, the project boosted climate awareness and motivated real-world eco-actions, showing the power of education in fostering a well-informed, active community for a greener future.
▶Impact
R1 Climatopia Human Needs Handbook: This handbook was developed, containing three chapters in English, providing a robust theoretical and psychological framework for understanding human needs in the context of climate education. Additionally, translations of the third chapter in Latvian, Greek, German and Spanish were made available, enhancing the handbook's accessibility across diverse linguistic backgrounds. R2 Climatopia Educational Kit: This project result includes a comic book (R2.1) that merges scientific knowledge with engaging storytelling, using visualization and character-driven narratives to convey complex concepts related to climate change. This material is designed to make the science behind climate change accessible and engaging for children. Complementing this, a Self-Training Handbook (R2.2) was crafted for adults working with children, whether as teachers or parents, offering basic scientific knowledge on climate change, guidelines on comic creation activities, and resources for comics creation. R3 Climatopia Simulation and Decision-Making Game: Developed to engage learners in interactive models, this game allows students to explore the consequences of various actions on climate change across three levels of difficulty, fostering an active learning environment where theoretical knowledge is applied in practical, decision-making contexts. The game has been developed via the platform Genially, it has three difficulty levels and it is translated into all partner languages. R4 Climatopia Deployment Plan: This transnational report documents the pilot implementation of the project in partner schools, outlining the methodologies, evaluations, and best practices derived from the project's execution. It is translated into all partner languages. R5 Climate Insights: Policies and Politics: Aimed at bridging the gap between education and policy, this deliverable offers insights into the political and policy dimensions of climate change as it provides valuable recommendations across three distinct levels: schools, teachers, and policymakers, aiming to foster a comprehensive approach to climate change education and action.
