Hands on Learning Online: Gaining Results through Advanced Methods
โถSummary
We applied for this project because: 1) teachers are facing additional demands due to the pandemic, and 2) there is a persistent issue with male dominance in coding, programming, robotics, and related fields, leading to a skills gap in ICT compared to other areas. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted education, leading to a shift to online learning through platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. However, online learning poses challenges for practical subjects like STEAM, which require hands-on activities. The HOLOGRAM project aims to bridge this gap by providing tools and techniques to enhance online instruction in STEAM subjects, focusing on Robotics while addressing broader needs in online delivery of practical subjects for educators.
โถObjectives
The project was aiming to investigate partner needs and create training material to improve educators' ability to teach STEAM subjects online effectively. Specific objectives included: Identifying challenges teachers face in delivering STEAM subjects digitally. Developing high-quality learning activities combining STEM with arts-based activities. Integrating these activities into teacher education and professional development programs. Evaluating the impact of objectives 1 and 2. Creating accessible guidelines for broader use of HOLOGRAM results. The project would enable students and teachers to conduct STEAM activities remotely using various digital technologies. It would explore innovative ways of incorporating robotics and coding with ideas from arts subjects like dance, focusing on the expressive and health-promoting aspects. By integrating arts and STEM subjects, the project was aiming to address employment opportunities in social care and health sectors, positively impacting gender balance across the STEAM spectrum.
โถActivities
HOLOGRAM implemented the following activities: 1) Mapping and evaluation of current educational robotics practices through consultation with stakeholders 2) Design of new teaching and learning methods in robotics, with an emphasis on methods that can be deployed remotely 3) Resting and deployment of Teacher Professional Development courses to support use of these methods 4) Piloting of these methods in partner schools and evaluation of the results 5) Dissemination of our results
