e-SL4EU - e-Service Learning for more digital and inclusive EU Higher Education systems
▶Summary
The project was developed to address the emergence of e-Service-Learning (e-SL) as an innovative pedagogical approach in higher education. e-SL was implemented as a course-based, credit-bearing educational experience where students participated in service activities meeting community needs, and reflected on these experiences to deepen their understanding of course content and enhance civic responsibility. The project aimed to address several key needs: 1) improving the capacity of higher education teachers to transition to socially inclusive digital education; 2) enhancing lecturers’ digital and instructional design skills to utilize new technologies for Service-Learning; 3) shifting from traditional teaching models to more innovative pedagogical approaches; 4) raising student awareness of e-SL opportunities; 5) measuring the impact of e-SL activities on both student learning and community outcomes; 6) developing students’ digital skills and competences; and 7) facilitating the exchange of best practices and guidelines for organizing e-SL projects.
▶Objectives
The project successfully aimed to develop the University Third Mission into social engagement. It achieved the following objectives: 1) it built learning systems with an innovative pedagogical approach integrating community services into students’ curricula; 2) it promoted a shift from a traditional assistive model (service for the community) to a horizontal model of solidarity (service with the community); 3) it spread knowledge of e-SL methodologies by developing training materials for academics, guiding them in adopting e-SL and helping students address social needs, especially during emergencies like the pandemic; 4) it developed digital skills of HE lecturers/trainers and students to implement e-SL effectively; 5) it linked e-SL education with research and innovation, addressing community needs; 6) it put students’ hard and soft skills into practice through e-SL projects; 7) it maximized social impact and fostered civic responsibility; 8) it promoted prosocial behavior through engagement with people facing fewer opportunities; 9) it provided educational pathways for students who faced barriers to accessing education due to geographic, social, economic, or cultural challenges;
▶Impact
The project successfully achieved the following results and outcomes. PR1: Design principles for e-SL projects, defining the foundation for the eSL4EU course for trainers. PR2: Training materials and tools for academics, enabling the adoption of e-SL in inclusive higher education systems. This included blended training materials, a Training Manual for trainers, and an e-learning course for self-training. PR3: e-SL guidelines for community partners, explaining the role and responsibilities of community organizations in e-SL projects. PR4: Facilitating methodologies for trainers, providing guidance to support students in e-SL projects, along with a Facilitator's Video Guide for future self-training. PR5: Evaluation methodology and materials for assessing the social impact of e-SL projects on the community. PR6: Evaluation methodology for assessing students' learning outcomes, including a guide for other HEIs. The project also aimed to increase pedagogical skills of HE trainers, raise awareness of e-SL’s social impact, and promote its use in higher education, providing a full package of materials for HEIs to adopt and implement e-SL.
