Summary

We applied to the UNITY project after all partners had identified significant needs in education systems in particular in our own countries but in general also in other countries across Europe. Many schools lacked the tools, training, and resources to prepare students for the demands of a rapidly changing, digitalized world. Teachers often struggled to integrate STEAM education into their classrooms, leaving students unprepared for interdisciplinary challenges like climate change. Further, limited funding and support for primary-level STEAM education hindered the development of critical competencies. By joining this project the partners wanted to combine these different pillars in education, aimed to address these identified gaps, empower teachers with innovative methods, and equip students with future-ready skills through inclusive and sustainable approaches by creating a platform for everyone to use and to find all the material needed for the teacher.

Objectives

The UNITY project, aimed to address pressing educational needs and achieve meaningful, long-term impacts for both students and teachers in both our countries and across Europe. For students, the project wanted to develop future-ready skills and mindsets essential for navigating a rapidly digitalizing world. Through project-based learning in STEAM, students would learn the importance of online collaboration, communication, and teamwork, gain diverse perspectives, fostering an understanding of smart and sustainable growth and lifelong learning. The project also aimed to enhance their career prospects by cultivating interest in science-based "smart jobs".For teachers, the project aimed to provide opportunities for professional development through innovative teaching methods and tools. How to adopt and blend digital tools with project-based approaches, equipping them to teach critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and cooperative skills. It also aimed to support teachers in engaging students in diverse learning styles and in incorporating real-life challenges into their curriculum. The project also wanted to achieve and enrich the understanding of EU values, practices, and policies, while strengthen the ability to network.

Activities

The project implemented a range of structured activities to ensure effective collaboration, dissemination, and the achievement of its goals. These activities has been the following as also described in the application: Transnational Project Meetings (TPMs): Three in-person meetings held over the 36-month project duration, including a Kick-off meeting, a Mid-Evaluation meeting, and a Final Evaluation meeting. These meetings focused on managing the project’s budget, timeline, partner roles, task allocations, risk management as well as planning the important PR4 in particular, plan our ME:s and also evaluate the project and planning forward. The partners met in Malmö, Bursa and Glina for these three meetings and these meetings fulfilled their purposes well. A descision was made to exchange the meeting in UK for the meeting in Bursa since UK was withdrawn from the project. In the application it was stated that the second meeting was going to be in UK. Bi-Monthly Virtual Meetings: A total of more than 30 virtual meetings were conducted to maintain regular communication, address emerging issues, and support ongoing collaboration among partners. These meetings have had high priority with all partners and has been the core of the project. The meetings have been held every third week in Wednesday afternoon apart from during the summer and winter holidays. Apart from these meetings we have held other more specified meetings in between these meetings. These extra meetings have sometimes been with all partners and sometimes with just some partners but this is accordingly to what the extra meetings have been about. A number of extra meetings have been held regarding the website in order to try to visualise as much of what the partners are all thinking and what is actually possible to do within the website tool. Other meetings have been specifically about some of the project results, working meetings where we have worked together on some tasks and about extra activities we were planning. These meetings are continuing every third week during the spring as well in order to plan both shared diseemination activities, workshops and the Award Framework we are going to work with during most of 2025 and this takes a lot of planning to conduct. Here eTwinning will play a big part, more of that below. Learning, Teaching, and Training (LTT) Activities: Two LTT activities were carried out: Important to note is that we really early on in the project decided to change from having the first LTTA in Sweden and the second in Italy to instead conduct them the other way around. This is because at the first meeting held in Malmö the coordinator told the partners that in May 2024 a very special event was going to be held. THis event occur every second year and is called InnoCarnival and it adresses the exact same challenges as UNITY and the project partners decided to start a collaboration with the organisors of InnoCarnival to enhance the project and the students participating. This turned out to be a successful change to make and has strenghtened the collaboration with InnoCarnival project leaders and also stakeholders through them. It also fit well into PR4 and made this project result successful. The first LTTA focused on training project staff to enhance teaching methodologies, digital skills, and the ability to integrate STEAM and project-based learning. The second LTTA involved student participants, providing them with hands-on experience in applying STEAM principles to address real-world challenges like climate change. Multiplier Events: Six national multiplier events and one international event were organized to disseminate project results and insights. eTwinning Project: In our application we were planning to organise for an international eTwinning initiative titled “UNITY” and even though we did get this started when we would have liked to due to all the problems that ESEP were facing which made motivating the teachers to join very hard we have also proven that hard work do give results because inspired from all the activities in PR4 both partners and teachers are really motivated to keep on working together towards our next Award Framework that will take place in the autumn of 2025 and for this purpose the eTwinning Twinspace will be the platform for communication and preparation not to mention sharing. We are now harvesting all the work from the project and have found a way of letting the project continue to thrive even though the project has officially ended. These activities not only facilitated the project’s smooth management but also ensured collaborative dissemination, active participation, and impactful learning experiences for both teachers and students. Additionally, the project produced tangible outcomes, including the PR1,PR 2, PR3 , PR4 and PR5.

Impact

The UNITY project delivered significant outputs and impactful results.A Curriculum on Skills Development using Project-Based Learning (PBL) and STEAM methodologies equipped students with future-focused competencies. A Web Platform and eLearning Modules included interactive chapters, video simulations, and a “projector” tool showcasing climate-related projects across schools, fostering collaboration.Ten Virtual Webinars and Seminars, including an EU-level session, provided teachers with tools to engage students and prepare them for global challenges. An Award Framework recognized outstanding climate change projects, culminating in an international ceremony and a revised methodology for future use.The “Save the World with Your Dreams” campaign inspires communities to act against climate change, extending the project's reach and lasting impact far beyond the end of the project. Here are an expanded list of concrete outputs and achieved impactful results: Curriculum on skills development (Result I): Developed a curriculum focused on using Project-Based Learning (PBL) and STEAM to foster skills development among students. In this part the first thing created was an extensive report in what PBL is and how to use this method. Connected to this report 60 detailed lesson plans was created and they were all based on PBL, aimed towards sustainability and climate change in particular but also introduced and suggested a variety of digital tools to implement and work with the lesson plan in order to enhance the learning of the students but also to develop their language skills by giving them different ways of expressing themselves. Web platform and eLearning modules (Result II): A comprehensive platform and eLearning modules were created, including chapters tailored for EU students and teachers. 10 video simulations/instructions were produced to enhance understanding. The platform features a “projector” tool with a digital map, showcasing climate-related projects by students across schools and countries. This allows schools, students, and teachers to connect and collaborate. Link to project platform: https://unity4future.eu/project-results/ Virtual webinars and seminars (Result III): - Ten virtual training sessions were conducted altogether, with one additional session at the EU level, focusing on equipping teachers with skills to engage students and prepare them for a rapidly changing world. These also serves as online live LTTAs (Learning, Teaching, and Training Activities). - Podcasts were also created adressing the urgent matters of sustainability and climat change and voices many students from different countries sharing their thoughts and ideas. Award framework (Result IV): - A methodological guideline was developed to award outstanding student and teacher projects on climate change, recognizing excellence and innovation. - This guideline was used to conduct a pilot award work including first work on a national level with schools being encouraged to work with projects aligned with the project objectives and then compete on first national level. Each winner from each category being performed in the different countries then qualified to compete in an international award ceremony. - An international award ceremony was performed with teams from all the countries and with judges from all countries as well. - From the pilot the guideline has been updated according to feedback from partners, teachers and judges in order to make it easier to use and easier to implement. This new framework will be used in 2025 when the next award ceremony will take place. Outreach campaign (Result V): - The “Save the World with Your Dreams” campaign encourages students, parents, teachers, and schools to take meaningful action on climate change, significantly expanding the project's reach and impact. - This result is mainly a forward going result where several plans has been formed by the coordinating partner with respectful help from all partners in both giving feedback, testing, disseminating and working to put it in a context.
