Objectives

The AWARE project was conceived with several strategic objectives aimed at addressing the multifaceted challenges of cybersecurity in the vocational education and training (VET) sector: - enhance cybersecurity skills - our primary goal was to significantly improve the cybersecurity skills among VET students, equipping them with the knowledge and competencies to effectively address digital security threats. - incorporate cybersecurity into VET curricula - we aimed to embed cybersecurity awareness and best practices as integral components of VET programmes, ensuring that cybersecurity education becomes a staple of vocational training. - strengthen SME security - by preparing a workforce adept in cybersecurity, we sought to enhance the digital defense mechanisms of SMEs, thereby contributing to the wider effort of safeguarding the digital economy. - promote a culture of cybersecurity awareness - we endeavoured to cultivate a culture of continuous cybersecurity awareness within the VET community, emphasizing the importance of proactive and preventive measures in digital practices.

Activities

The AWARE project involved 9 partners from 8 European countries and focused on a comprehensive range of activities across 24 months, structured into 6 phases. Key activities included: - developing the project's structural framework; - creating content and tools for cybersecurity education; - conducting assessment and validation processes; - implementing quality assurance and evaluation measures; - carrying out extensive dissemination and exploitation. The implementation unfolded as follows: - AWARE Knowledge Base development - this phase commenced with the meticulous selection of quality criteria, followed by the drafting of comprehensive guidelines. A careful process was undertaken to choose participants who would contribute to and benefit from the project. Subsequently, educational modules were developed, each tailored to fit the national contexts of participating entities, ensuring relevance and applicability across diverse educational environments. - AWARE Masterclass development - in this phase, the project team operationalized the previously established quality criteria to formulate methodological guidelines. These guidelines served as the foundation for structuring the modules, which were then developed alongside engaging stories to facilitate learning. A selection process for participants was implemented, mirroring the approach taken in the development of the Knowledge Base, with the aim of executing the Masterclass effectively within each national context. - AWARE Self-assessment Kit Cyber Guardian development: The creation of the Self-assessment Kit began with the selection of quality criteria, setting the standard for the project's outputs. The conceptual framework of the Kit was then designed, leading to its technical development and subsequent testing phase. This rigorous process allowed for the identification and implementation of necessary updates and adaptations, culminating in the finalization of the Self-assessment Kit, a tool designed to enhance cybersecurity awareness and competencies among VET learners and educators.

Impact

To nurture the development of digital competencies and a digital mindset, a transformative approach to teaching is essential, emphasizing interactive instruction and modern content. This shift positions educators as guides and mentors rather than traditional lecturers, fostering a learning environment where students are active participants. Additionally, it highlights the importance of partnerships between educational institutions and the private sector to ensure that digital skills training aligns with the practical demands of today's digital landscape. In response to these needs, the AWARE project has successfully delivered three pivotal outcomes: - AWARE Knowledge Base: This comprehensive resource offers modular content tailored to provide a deep understanding of cybersecurity's role and significance, both presently and in the future. It covers a wide range of topics aimed at enhancing awareness about digitalization and cybersecurity among VET learners and educators, preparing them to navigate the complexities of the digital age. - AWARE Masterclass - as an innovative educational tool, the Masterclass employs storytelling to teach safe digital navigation practices. This approach makes learning engaging and accessible for both VET educators and their students, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in digital safety. - AWARE Self-assessment Kit Cyber Guardian - this interactive online game serves as a dynamic platform for testing the cybersecurity awareness and practices of VET teachers and learners. By evaluating the knowledge and skills acquired through the Knowledge Base and Masterclass, the Kit plays a crucial role in reinforcing digital safety and hygiene. - AWARE Opportunity Corner, developed as an additional feature - an interactive map designed to showcase events across Europe focused on cybersecurity awareness raising and training. It serves as a centralized platform to highlight various activities such as workshops, competitions, summer schools, seminars, conferences, and more. By providing this comprehensive overview, the AWARE Opportunity Corner aims to promote collaboration, networking, and participation in cybersecurity-related events throughout the region. Users can explore and discover opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills in cybersecurity through this platform. The AWARE project fostered collaboration between educational systems and the private sector to align skills development with real-world digital needs. Specifically, the project enhanced cyber security awareness and equipped participants with new skills, approaches, and tools.
