CT.Uni: Creative Thinking – Taking an Innovative and STEAM Approach for a Transdisciplinary University
▶Summary
Higher education institutions today face mounting pressure to respond to rapidly evolving societal, environmental, and technological challenges. However, traditional discipline-based teaching methods often fall short in equipping students with the creative, critical, and collaborative skills needed to navigate uncertainty and complexity. The CT.Uni project emerged as a direct response to these challenges, aiming to transform academic culture by fostering transdisciplinary, innovative, and STEAM-driven approaches to learning and teaching. STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics offers a powerful framework for encouraging holistic thinking, problem-solving, and inclusive collaboration across fields. CT.Uni supported students, academic staff, and university leaders in adopting new mindsets and practices that connect education with real-world issues. The project also strengthened links between universities and external stakeholders such as municipalities, NGOs, and companies, promoting civic engagement and societal relevance. CT.Uni builds on the legacy of DT.Uni and deepens its impact through institutional innovation and creative transformation.
▶Objectives
The primary objective of CT.Uni was to promote a deep shift in academic thinking by embedding creative, divergent, and transdisciplinary approaches into higher education. The project aimed to empower students, educators, researchers, and university managers to cross disciplinary boundaries and develop solutions to real-world challenges. Through a STEAM-based framework, CT.Uni focused on strengthening problem-solving, innovation, and critical thinking skills. One major goal was to enhance curriculum design and teaching methods by integrating inputs from external stakeholders such as cities, companies, and NGOs into academic settings. CT.Uni sought to build institutional capacity for educational transformation by encouraging openness, experimentation, and flexibility. In doing so, the project supported the development of future-ready universities, aligned with European goals for inclusion, creativity, and excellence. The project also contributed to fostering intercultural collaboration and encouraged cooperation between diverse academic and societal actors at both local and European levels.
▶Impact
CT.Uni delivered four major intellectual outputs: a meta-analysis of successful practices, a practical e-handbook, curriculum innovation recommendations, and a final evaluation report. These results were developed collaboratively, tested through pilots, and adjusted based on feedback. Although a planned scientific output (PR5) was cancelled, the decision allowed for deeper practical implementation and broader stakeholder engagement. The project exceeded expectations in several areas: two international training events enhanced teaching competencies; nine multiplier events, including a final conference, extended outreach; and multiple universities began incorporating project results into curricula and strategic planning. Strong collaboration with municipalities, NGOs, and businesses added depth and relevance. Participants reported significant growth in creativity, critical thinking, intercultural competence, and digital skills. The project’s impact continues through open-access materials and ongoing institutional change. CT.Uni proved to be a catalyst for reimagining education and fostering sustainable, creative, and challenge-responsive universities across Europe.
