Summary

The increasing amount of waste due to population growth, urbanization and industrialization deepens environmental problems. The environmentally friendly transformation of organic waste is critical...

Objectives

The Powerworms Project aimed to study, research, and validate the production techniques and characteristics of vermicomposting in order to transfer knowledge to the relevant parties: farmers and consumers. The project will encourage networking and discussion among researchers, academics, public institution representatives, marketing experts, consumers, and local producers to share different perspectives and expert opinions and discover new opportunities and ways to improve current production processes and facilitate product innovation. The main objectives of this project are: (1) to determine the level of contribution of vermicomposting to the productivity of rural agriculture and farming and (2) to demonstrate the multiple benefits of this technology: low-cost biofertilizer production, environmental management of solid waste and agricultural residues, increased soil fertility, better tasting quality food (3) to teach chemical-free vermicomposting production techniques to farmers and homegrown amateurs and (4) to increase agroecology awareness among citizens.

Activities

We carried out 5 main activities to achieve 3 main outputs within the scope of the project. WP01-Project Management and Implementation Activities WP02-Result ID1 (IO2)—Training Needs Analysis: Training Needs Analysis provided a comprehensive perspective on the current situation in the participating countries. The analysis was carried out in two consecutive steps, starting with training needs assessment and continuing with learning needs gap analysis. WP03- Result ID 2 (IO3)- Educational ToolBox Development. WP04- Result ID 3 (IO4)- PowerWORMS Training Online Course. WP05- PowerWORMS Promotion and Awareness Raising Campaign.

Impact

The Powerworms project has three outputs. Result ID 1: The first output was the Training Needs Analysis. This output presented the current status of waste reuse in agricultural production. It identified the training needs of the participating countries regarding worm composting and biocomposting practices. It identified the needs of the education sector and the level of public awareness in the participating countries. Result ID 2: The second output of our project was the development of the Training Toolbox. Based on the Training Needs Analysis, the Training Toolbox includes a course catalogue and handbook, video lessons, interactive videos, learning activities, a virtual library, assessment exams and a mobile application. Result ID 3: PowerWORMS Training Online Course. The learning materials and tools were integrated into the LLOOF online learning platform and made available as open source.
