Objectives

The main objectives we aimed to achieve by implementing the project were: Stimulate Reading Motivation: We wanted to ignite a passion for reading among blind children by providing them with engaging and accessible reading materials. Improve Literacy Skills: Our goal was to enhance the literacy skills of blind children, particularly in Braille reading, by providing them with resources and technology tailored to their needs. Promote Tactile Education: We aimed to incorporate tactile learning experiences into blind children's education to engage their sense of touch and enhance learning outcomes. Integrate Assistive Technology: We sought to integrate assistive technology into the learning environment to provide blind children with greater access to educational materials and opportunities for independent learning. Create Inclusive Environments: Our aim was to create inclusive learning environments where blind children feel supported and empowered, with equal access to educational resources and opportunities for growth. In summary, our objective was to make a meaningful impact on the lives of blind children by fostering a love for reading, improving literacy skills, promoting tactile education, integrating assistive technology.

Activities

Collaborating with our Erasmus partners, we engaged in a dynamic exchange of knowledge, materials, and didactic courses to establish a library catering to blind and visually impaired elementary school children. We created accessible reading corners within our schools, offering traditional and audiobook options to all children. Emphasizing multisensory experiences, we introduced interactive storytelling, scented books, and modern technology to make reading enjoyable. We provided parent courses in Braille to support literacy at home. Workshops were conducted to train teachers in digital aids and reading software for blind users. Authors featuring blind protagonists were invited to inspire diverse representation in literature. We organized reading groups with mixed-age students for collaborative learning. To address the balance between braille and technology, discussions were held with blind adults and teenagers. Our collective efforts aimed to foster an inclusive learning environment, empowering blind children.

Impact

The project yielded concrete outcomes: Improved Reading Skills: Standardized tests showed significant enhancements in all children's reading abilities, attributed to daily reading, parental involvement, appealing materials, and staff training. Increased Reading Motivation: Survey results and teacher observations revealed heightened engagement in reading activities, both at home and in school, indicating increased motivation among students. Inclusive Learning Environments: Establishment of accessible reading corners equipped with diverse materials and technology ensured equal access to reading opportunities for all students. Capacity Building: Workshops improved teachers' proficiency in supporting blind students, while a parenting course empowered parents to assist with literacy development at home. Collaborative Partnerships: Collaborations with the University of Leuven and Erasmus partners enriched the project's outcomes through knowledge exchange and resource sharing. In summary, the project achieved improved reading skills and motivation, created inclusive learning spaces, enhanced capacity among educators and parents, and fostered collaborative partnerships.
