E-learning platform for citizenship education: Escape for Democracy
▶Summary
We recognized a pressing need to address the lack of democratic participation among young people, particularly in rural areas of EU countries. Despite their eagerness to engage in EU projects, our youth lacked sufficient knowledge of EU values, social, cultural, & historical heritage, and demonstrated limited interest in democratic processes. We saw an opportunity to bridge this gap by developing innovative e-learning materials focused on citizenship education. E2020 joined to innovate education to engage youth in democracy through gamification. Walktogether aimed to promote gamification and NFE for active citizenship. Viimsi focused on using gamification to educate local youth about democracy, integrating e-learning materials into their youth center activities. Kalimera expanded into citizenship education through the E4D project, collaborating with local partners to enhance youth engagement in rural areas. We aimed to empower youth with comprehensive knowledge of political systems, democracy, and human rights to foster active engagement in democratic participation. Our goal was to equip them with the skills to contribute meaningfully to our community and the EU.
▶Objectives
Through transnational and intersectoral collaboration, this consortium aimed to contribute to democratic participation across EU member states by creating powerful e-learning solutions based on gamification and digitalization of non-formal education aimed at youth. By understanding the importance of working together across sectors to bring education into the digital age, the results of this project directly contributed to teaching and promoting European Values, Democratic participation, the principles of unity and diversity, as well as the EU's diverse social, cultural, and historical heritage. The main objectives established through E4D were: -The consortium established and developed transnational cooperation between diverse intersectoral organizations, exchanging knowledge, information, and resources to contribute to the digitalization and innovation of youth work in order to foster the values of democratic participation for youth. -An e-learning module was developed based on digital gamification and non-formal education in order to teach and promote European Values, Democratic participation, the principles of unity and diversity, as well as the EU's diverse social, cultural, and historical heritage.
▶Activities

Quality Management, Research Validity, & Evaluation of Content: Developed a robust quality assurance plan which included regular evaluations, quality reports, & validation of project processes and educational materials. E-learning Platform - Escape for Democracy: Created an open-source e-learning platform www.escapefordemocracy.com featuring 3 digital educational escape rooms on citizenship education supported by a comprehensive handbook with research results and educational scenarios. Dissemination & Exploitation: Implemented a wide-reaching dissemination strategy, including developing a detailed plan, creating visibility materials, managing social media and website updates, and organizing multiplier events to engage stakeholders in the youth sector and policy-making. Activities were designed to enhance democratic participation among youth, promote EU values, and ensure the sustainability and widespread impact of our project across EU member states.
▶Impact
We created 3 digital educational escape rooms for EU citizenship education, accompanied by a handbook featuring 9 scenarios and a toolkit. Our e-learning platform, www.escapefordemocracy.com, offers interactive modules in multiple languages, including English. These tools significantly improve youth understanding and engagement in democratic principles and European values, bolstered by digital certificates. E4D aligned with the EU Youth Strategy, involving 113 young people in pilot testing events across four countries during Erasmus Days 2023, surpassing our target of 40 participants. This initiative aimed to deliver comprehensive citizenship education and empower young individuals with essential political knowledge and human rights awareness. We forged associated partnerships among diverse organizations across EU member states, promoting knowledge exchange and digital innovation in youth work to enhance democratic participation. We also showcased our educational resources during a KA1 TC in Spain to engage international organizations. We delivered innovative learning opportunities within the EU and served as a model for youth practitioners globally, encouraging similar approaches to foster democratic engagement among young people
