Youth4All

We applied for the Youth 4 All project as it offered a unique opportunity to address two critical social issues prevalent in Europe: the integration of young migrants and refugees, and the challenge of generational renewal in rural areas. The main challenge faced by young migrants in rural areas included limited access to dignified jobs and quality educational opportunities due to the scarcity of resources available. In response, Youth 4 All strategically focused on forestry education as a means to provide inclusive and decent employment opportunities to the targeted groups. One of the project's notable strengths was its ability to bridge the gap between youth and forestry, providing vulnerable young individuals with pathways to employment and independence within the agricultural domain. Furthermore, Youth 4 All not only strengthened educational programs in forestry but also conducted valuable research and compiled an extensive overview of similar projects and initiatives across Europe to exchange best practices and keep improving the quality of these educational projects. The project tackled issues like youth unemployment and social integration while also contributing to the much-needed revitalization of the primary sector.

The primary goal of implementing the project was to foster social inclusion and integration for migrant and refugee people residing in rural areas across Europe. A key objective was to share best practices concerning the implementation of social inclusion activities tailored to the unique context of rural communities. By facilitating the exchange of successful strategies and approaches, the project aimed to equip stakeholders with effective tools to promote cohesion and acceptance within these environments. By sharing best practices in this field, partners could refine their educational offerings, thereby empowering migrants and refugees with valuable skills and knowledge. Furthermore, the project aimed to unite efforts in conducting research and assessing the current landscape of initiatives aimed at fostering social sustainability and inclusion for migrant communities in rural areas. By creating a comprehensive overview of ongoing projects and initiatives, the project aimed to identify gaps, challenges, and opportunities, ultimately contributing to more informed decision-making and collaborative action in addressing the needs of migrant populations in rural Europe.

Four activities were implemented throughout the project. Firstly, we conducted Activity 1, called “Social innovation in rural areas”, which involved all partners collaborating on organising training and workshops covering topics such as social sustainability, migrant and refugee inclusion, and the challenges faced by participating organizations. This activity laid the groundwork for our research process and facilitated the identification of innovative programs in this area. Activity 2, Forestry Education for Inclusion, aimed to develop teaching methods and curriculum specifically tailored to migrant and refugee students in forestry education, merging expertise in migrant education with forestry training. Activity 3 involved research by each partner to assess existing programs and organisations working on migrant and refugee inclusion in the broad field of agriculture training. This research aimed to address the challenges identified in Activity 1 and gather innovative best practices. Finally, Activity 4 focused on creating an openly accessible transnational research report synthesizing the findings of Activity 3, along with sharing the project outcomes via social media.

The project produced several tangible outputs and results. Firstly, there was a notable enhancement in the quality of social interventions conducted by partners within rural areas, specifically targeting migrant and refugee communities, as well as a better understanding of the needs and challenges the target community faces in terms of integration in rural areas. We developed a report on best practices, possible limitations to social innovation when working for the inclusion of migrant and refugee communities in rural areas. A curriculum focusing on teaching forestry practices was developed, aiming to facilitate the integration of young migrants and refugees into the labor force. This openly accessible curriculum gathered the best methods and practices to teach the target group. A comprehensive transnational research report was compiled, providing insights into the current state of the field across Europe as well as best practices in the integration of young migrants and refugees in rural areas. This openly accessible report serves as a valuable resource for stakeholders, and researchers, fostering knowledge exchange and informed decision-making. Lastly, the results of the project were shared through dissemination activities.
