▶Objectives
The objectives of the project were to map education and employment needs in the Sámi film industry and study paths to becoming a professional. The objective was also to strengthen cooperation between Sámi Education Institute and International Sámi Film Institute and explore different cooperation models and methods in the future. The goal was also to develop cooperation between educational organisations and working life in the Sámi film industry, to get information on how to develop media education to better meet the labour market needs and to increase the interest of the film industry among Sámi youth.
▶Activities
The project carried out a 35-page survey of the education and employment needs of the Sámi film industry. A total of 13 Sámi film and media professionals or representatives of educational organisations in the Sámi region and its periphery were interviewed for the project. The project organised two workshops, one in Kautokeino and the other one in Inari. In the two-day workshop in Kautokeino, SAKK’s media students and personnel got acquainted with the making, financing and distribution of the Indigenous film. The five-day workshop in Inari, the basics of film production were reviewed, and production-related exercises were carried out. The point of view was especially the making of a film in the north. In cooperation with Skábmagovat film festival, The Youth Day film screening and interview with a film professional reached more than 90 young people from the Sámi region from middle schools, high schools and the media line. Through our activities, we networked with education providers, film producers, media students and other actors in the Sámi film industry.
▶Impact
The report of the education and employment needs in the Sámi film industry clarified and determined the needs of the rapidly growing Sámi film industry and supported the development of film and media education. The project led to better cooperation between ISFI and SAKK, as well as educational organisations and actors in the Sámi film industry in Finland, Norway and Sweden. The project had a positive effect on the interest of media and film education and the Sámi film industry among Sámi youth. The project also increased media students' knowledge of the international Sámi film industry and developed their skills through workshops. ISFI also got to know media education students and gained a lot of new insights into the needs of film industry education in the Sámi region.
