Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed universities’ limited flexibility in responding to unexpected disruptions. While institutions invested in digital tools, many teaching approaches simply replicated face-to-face settings online, resulting in fatigue and reduced learning quality. Students increasingly demand flexible, inclusive formats, and universities need resilient models to ensure continuity of high-quality education under uncertainty. At the same time, faculty members lack a sound conceptual framework for integrating face-to-face and online teaching. Our project addresses these needs by developing an innovative hybrid educational model that equips higher education institutions and teachers with the tools to design, adapt, and sustain effective learning environments in unpredictable contexts.

Objectives

The project aimed to stimulate innovative teaching and learning practices by creating a new hybrid educational model (NHE-model) for higher education. This model was designed to ensure inclusion, flexibility, and sustainability, enabling smooth transitions between face-to-face and online learning. It supports teachers in designing resilient learning environments and strengthens students’ autonomy and engagement. To operationalize the model, we developed a modular certification program (MOC-program) for higher education teachers, empowering them with up-to-date competences. Our objectives included piloting the NHE-model in diverse subjects, integrating feedback from multiple stakeholders, and making the results publicly available to foster long-term adoption across Europe.

Activities

The project was structured in three main phases. First, we conducted a needs analysis, literature review, and case study assessment to identify key skills and gaps in hybrid education. Based on these insights, the consortium developed the NHE-model as a flexible, “reversible” design supporting both face-to-face and online teaching. In the second phase, we created the modular certification program (MOC-program) to train university teachers, including modules on digital competences, inclusive learning design, and innovative assessment strategies. Pilot courses were implemented in economics, social sciences, and technical subjects across partner institutions. Finally, we evaluated the pilots through feedback, learning analytics, and expert reviews, while disseminating results via publications, conferences, and multiplier events.

Impact

The project delivered a comprehensive NHE-model providing teachers with practical, research-based guidelines to integrate face-to-face and online learning in flexible and inclusive ways. We established a modular certification program, tested by over 200 higher education teachers, which is now available as an open resource. Prototype lectures in multiple disciplines demonstrated the model’s applicability, and evaluation confirmed improvements in teaching quality, student engagement, and institutional resilience. Dissemination activities, including scientific publications, multiplier events, and expert networks, expanded the reach of results beyond the consortium. Overall, the project enhanced digital competences, promoted innovative teaching practices, and contributed to a more inclusive and sustainable European higher education system.
