โ–ถSummary

This project addresses the urgent need for students to become active citizens capable of making informed decisions with moral and ethical implications. In today's socio-economic and political climate dialogue and argumentation skills are crucial to engage in productive discussions. However, the inadequacy of teachers' professional development, lack of adequate resources and support make it challenging to emphasize citizenship education. Teachers struggle to coordinate discussions around social, moral, and ethical issues, which introduce uncertainty and make it difficult to guide student learning. ACT-DI-V was initiated to address this gap by enhancing teachers' pedagogical competencies. It helped them transform their teaching practices to better facilitate discussions on active and responsible citizenship. ACT-DI-V raised awareness about the importance of promoting active and responsible citizenship education through dialogue and argumentation. It built teachers' pedagogical competencies in this area, developed hands-on resources to improve students' critical thinking and decision-making skills for democratic participation, and supported teachers in reflecting on their practices through virtual communities of practice.

โ–ถObjectives

In today's socio-economic and political climate, it is crucial for students to actively shape their world rather than be shaped by it. To achieve this, we sought to enhance teachers' pedagogical skills, enabling them to better facilitate discussions on active and responsible citizenship. Addressing the inadequacies in professional development schemes, limited teaching time, and lack of resources was essential to making citizenship education a core focus in schools. We raised awareness about the importance of promoting active and responsible citizenship education through dialogue and argumentation. Secondly, we aimed to build the pedagogic competencies of teachers in this area, providing them with the skills and resources needed to teach these concepts effectively. Thirdly, we developed hands-on resources for teachers to improve students' critical thinking and decision-making skills, enabling them to participate in democratic discussions. Lastly, we supported teachers in reflecting on their practices through a vCoP, fostering a collaborative environment for continuous professional development.

โ–ถActivities

Firstly, we established a robust project management structure to ensure effective collaboration among partners. Secondly, we focused on developing the Active Citizenship Toolkit. This involved conducting a literature review, distributing questionnaires, and holding focus groups to gather valuable data to identify needs. The Toolkit, which includes best practices and policy recommendations, was then translated into the languages of our partner countries to ensure its accessibility and relevance. Thirdly, we designed and implemented a blended learning training program for teachers which included detailed lesson plans and practical activities aimed at enhancing teachers' pedagogical skills in each partner country to ensure the program's effectiveness and adaptability. Then, we created an interactive eLearning platform to host the Toolkit, training resources, and Virtual Communities of Practice (vCoP) to support teachers in their professional development and promote active citizenship education. Lastly, we developed a comprehensive dissemination and exploitation plan. This included the development of a project website and social media pages, and organizing workshops to share the project's results with a broader audience.

โ–ถImpact

The concrete outputs of our project included the development of the Active Citizenship Toolkit, which features a framework and best practices, translated into partner languages. We designed and implemented a blended learning training program for teachers, complete with detailed lesson sequences and practical activities, which was piloted in partner countries following a train-the-trainer event. Additionally, we created an interactive eLearning platform that hosted the MOOC, Toolkit, gamified resources, and Virtual Communities of Practice (vCoP). The expected non-material results were a greater understanding of the uses of responsible citizenship via dialogic and argumentative pedagogies and improved pedagogical competencies of teachers in implementing these methods. These outcomes were achieved through continuous professional development, collaborative learning environments, and the integration of innovative teaching practices. Dissemination activities ensured the project's sustainability and long-term impact, enhancing teachers' skills and promoting active citizenship education.
