Summary

We applied for DIGITUP project to address the critical digital skills gap among European SMEs, micro-businesses, and self-entrepreneurs, which hampers their ability to adopt Industry 4.0 technologies and remain competitive in an increasingly digital economy. SMEs represent 99% of Europe’s businesses, yet many lack basic digital skills, preventing them from effectively using digital platforms and tools essential for growth and innovation. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift to digital operations, revealing a significant need for SMEs to adapt to new realities such as remote work and online business models. SMEs often face challenges such as limited awareness of digital opportunities, lack of expertise to implement digital solutions, and a gap in understanding the long-term benefits of digital transformation. DIGITUP project addresses these needs by providing tailored training, tools, and resources to help SME managers, self-entrepreneurs, and VET educators acquire the digital skills necessary to thrive. By focusing on practical, accessible solutions, DIGITUP empowers these groups to engage in the digital economy and enhance their competitiveness in global markets.

Objectives

DIGITUP project aimed to identify the most in-demand digital skills for SMEs and self-enterprises, providing cross-sectoral insights into future digital needs and the key sectors impacted by technological advancements. The goal was to assist SME managers and self-entrepreneurs in enhancing their technological capacity, upskilling in essential digital competences, and adding value to their businesses. By focusing on emerging technologies related to Industry 4.0, the project sought to help participants improve their digital strategies and adopt innovative tools, ultimately boosting their competitiveness and growth potential. Furthermore, DIGITUP aimed to promote long-term sustainability by equipping SMEs with the necessary skills to navigate future challenges and integrate into the broader digital economy. The project strived to strengthen the role of SMEs in Europe’s economy by reducing digital skill gaps and fostering their ability to innovate and grow.
