Objectives

The cooperation of schools aims at scientific literacy on climate change and the climate crisis and the development of a culture of prevention based on scientific evidence. Students became young researchers and drew primary meteorological data from the stations to process them and through the creation of printed and digital material they had the opportunity to build solid knowledge on the natural processes related to the climate crisis. Furthermore, through the activities implemented, the adoption of small changes and habits is sought, which, however, can contribute to the reversal of the ominous scientific predictions on climate change and are in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. The participation of the students was completed with their contribution to the production of digital and printed informational material. Furthermore, the cultivation of soft skills (4 C's 21st century) was pursued through the experiential approach of concepts. STEM teaching was achieved through activities such as the creation of an application that was uploaded on the Play Store and is available for Android mobiles and the creation of a digital Story Map using ESRI's ArcGIS software.

Activities

The activities implemented were: 1. Purchase of quality and installation of meteorological equipment for the two schools 2. Collaboration with the National Observatory of Athens 3. Formative educational visit of teachers to the school in Turkey 4. Teachers and students from both countries implemented mobilities in both countries where they participated in events and field visits 5. Awareness-raising actions: A) Publication of a leaflet with civil protection instructions for fires and floods which was distributed to the local community B) Workshop with an invited representative meteorologist of the METEO Meteorological Network of the National Observatory of Athens at the Conference Center of the Regional Unit of Evia C) Participation in school programs presentation events (3 times) D) Participation in the BeSafeNet Olympiad competition in the years 2023 and 2024. It is a tool for strengthening risk awareness among citizens. It is supported by the Council of Europe's Euro-Mediterranean Open Partial Agreement on Major Disasters. 6. Book publication in printed and digital form, site creation 7. Publish a digital Story Map using ESRI's ArcGIS software

Impact

The creation of digital and printed material has been completed. The printed material will be distributed in a targeted manner to services related to Civil Protection (fire brigade, offices for the Civil Protection of the Municipalities of Evia and Regional Unit of Evia) and to schools. The site with the digital version of the book and accompanying material will be shared with the schools of the prefecture and there will be a link to the school's blog. The schools' weather stations are operational and can provide data whenever requested. The meteorological equipment is visible and accessible to students for the needs of the courses. The meteorological station of Nea Artakis High School was connected to the METEO network of the National Observatory of Athens (https://penteli.meteo.gr/stations/neaartaki/) providing online realtime data available to the scientific community and any other interested party, thus contributing to the purposes of civil protection. The completion of the programme has helped to create strong relationships between the two schools and to improve the knowledge of the contracting parties. A dossier with questionnaires before and after the actions is kept partly digital.
