Fostering Online Operative Development for Agriculture Literacy and Learning
▶Summary
The FOOD4ALL project addressed gaps in agricultural education mainly at primary but also to secondary school levels. Agriculture is crucial for economic stability and food security, yet often seen as unattractive by young people. Many students opt for disciplines like ICT or medicine due to limited awareness of agri-food career opportunities. The project integrated agricultural topics into school education to spark early interest. FOOD4ALL met key needs by: 1. Raising awareness of agriculture’s societal role through classroom education. 2. Equipping educators with tools to teach agri-food topics. 3. Encouraging collaboration between teachers, agri-food stakeholders and farmers. 4. Promoting digital learning with interactive training materials. 5. Enhancing curricula with modern agricultural insights. 6. Boosting workforce interest to strengthen the sector’s economy. Targeting students aged mainly 8-12 but also 12-18, the project adapted to different national education systems. By leveraging science curricula, FOOD4ALL successfully raised awareness, provided resources and tried to inspire students toward agricultural careers.
▶Objectives
The FOOD4ALL project aimed to the promotion of agricultural and food education in schools, inspiring students and equipping educators with modern resources. The project sought to integrate agriculture into the classroom as an essential subject, addressing misconceptions and raising awareness of its significance. By providing digital tools and interactive learning materials, FOOD4ALL empowered educators to introduce agricultural topics creatively, fostering students' interest in agri-food careers. Additionally, the project tends to strengthened collaboration between primary and secondary education with higher education institutions through the Teacher Ambassadors program, ensuring a sustainable impact. Overall, FOOD4ALL contributed to modernizing school curricula, enhancing digital education and building connections between students, teachers and agri-food stakeholders.
▶Activities
The project implemented a series of activities designed to integrate agriculture into school education. First, it developed digital training courses and open educational resources (OER) for teachers and students, including lesson plans, a digital game and audiovisual career profiles. A virtual farm tour experience was created, allowing students to explore agri-food production digitally. To support educators, a Teacher Ambassadors program facilitated training and knowledge exchange. The project also organized 3 Consortium Transnational Meetings and 5 national webinars on innovative agricultural education. Furthermore, FOOD4ALL promoted Agriculture Literacy Month in Greece as an event, raising awareness about agriculture’s role in society.
▶Impact
FOOD4ALL delivered specific results, enhancing digital education and raising awareness about agriculture in schools. The project created digital training materials, including a digital course on the Business of Food, interactive resources and career-oriented audiovisual content. It trained around 93 school educators in agricultural education, equipping them with innovative teaching strategies. It is estimated that around 864 students engaged directly and indirectly (around 300 students indirectly, through the direct collaboration with school teachers) with the project’s educational materials, broadening their understanding of agri-food systems. Additionally, a tool network of stakeholders—including educators, students, farmers, and policymakers—was established, fostering collaboration across sectors. The project also organized 5 national webinars, further strengthening knowledge exchange. Through these outputs, FOOD4ALL tended to modernized mostly primary but also secondary education, encouraged digital learning and promoted agriculture as a viable and dynamic career path.
