Objectives

We wanted to prepare programming tasks together and collect feedback from both teachers and students. We wanted to develop teachers didactic and pedagogical skills in teaching programming and work on programming tasks suitable for middle schoolers. We also wanted to bring concreteness to the study of programming and expand STEAM education in schools. Peer learning and with the help of learning by doing together with their foreign partners, the aim was also to develop the students' social skills and language skills.

Activities

The project started with a common programming problem, which was solved before the first online meeting. At the meeting, students from both countries presented their own solutions to the problem. During both visits, we organized LEGO programming workshops led by teachers at schools. In the workshops, the students were given programming tasks, for which they developed a solution as a group work. In Finland, we participated in a science class organized by the University of Tampere, where we programmed a wind power plant with micro:bit in the functional workshop. We got more LEGO programming examples during a visit to Guglielmo Marconi-Margherita Hack in Italy, where older students presented their works that had participated in the programming competition. There, our students could assemble LEGO robots and program them under the guidance of the students. In Italy, we also got to know 3D modeling at the Technological and Digital Center FabLab Poliba. Everyone designed their own printable object.

Impact

Concrete outputs were programming tasks with model solutions. Programming tasks can be used and applied in teaching programming, also by school teachers other than those who participated in the project. Didactic and pedagogical skills of teachers became stronger. Social skills and language skills of teachers and students developed through peer learning and learning by doing.
