▶Objectives
This project fully responded to the general objective of meeting the needs for exchanges and strengthening the knowledge of managers of small European islands in terms of circular economy and adaptation to climate change, via the specific objectives: -Strengthen the capacities of small islands and less experienced European organizations to work in networks -Strengthen the technical skills of project partners in the aforementioned areas, and sustainable territorial planning. Sharing experiences is essential to strengthen their resilience to climate change. The objective was also to strengthen the capacities to use the SMILO sustainable territorial management tools (territorial diagnosis and strategic plan) and for SMILO to strengthen its technical capacities linked to the subjects of the project and its capacity to lead the islands towards sustainable territorial approaches. -Strengthen European cooperation, through dialogue, the implementation of co-constructed activities, including welcoming a delegation on their own island, and the creation of common results with European partners -Enrich the SMILO catalog of concrete actions dedicated to disseminating good island practices
▶Activities
The project aimed to develop exchanges between partners from small European islands. Four transnational inter-island meetings were organized on the small project islands: Frioul (FR), Gozo (MT), Hvar-Pakleni (HR) and Sifnos (GR). The programs for these meetings were determined according to the skills needs of the partners in the field of the circular economy and solutions to climate change. Local experts trained the partners as well as local participants (local stakeholders, including public authorities, local NGOs, residents, etc.) with an average of more than 50 participants per event. Thus, these meetings allowed participants to exchange with other islands on the circular economy in order to gain skills in this area and in sustainable territorial planning, to defend island ecosystems, to promote European cooperation and to develop more sustainable management of their own territory by drawing inspiration from the training and good practices shared during inter-island meetings. Good practice sheets have been written and shared widely to promote the project and the circular economy on small islands.
▶Impact
The project made it possible to create within the SMILO network a strengthened exchange group with a view to transferring know-how in the field of the circular economy, climate change and sustainable territorial planning/management. The experimentation of an innovative model of inter-island cooperation enabled the organization of an inter-island meeting co-constructed by the partners (4 in total, including: exchanges of good practices, field visits, training, etc.): 50+ sustainable solutions exchanged, 200 people strengthened in technical capacities (local stakeholders, European island partners, SMILO, etc.) 8 good practices with high potential for replicability written, which will continue to be used/disseminated in the long term The partners were able to put the SMILO methodology into practice for sustainable territorial planning: 4 island committees, a consultation body bringing together the main stakeholders to agree on a shared vision of the sustainable development of the island in the long term (dynamics of continuous improvement thanks to the SMILO methodology). 3 new EU islands (Gozo, Sifnos, Pakleni) and strengthen its cooperation with Frioul.
