Objectives

The main objective of PANACEA was to contribute to reducing the gap between placebo and nocebo scientific evidence and clinical practice of the future, i.e., HE students in healthcare sciences, and of current healthcare professionals. The project aimed to develop evidence-based learning materials, clinical recommendations, a syllabus, and a web app to support students, educators, and healthcare professionals. Specific objectives included: providing HE students in healthcare sciences and current healthcare professionals with knowledge and competences about placebo and nocebo mechanisms and their effects on clinical outcomes and assisting practitioners in clinical practice; supporting medical HE institutions in enriching student’s curricula with a specific course on placebo and nocebo effects; and establishing and enhancing an effective student-centred active learning method on placebo and nocebo effects. Ultimately, PANACEA aimed to contribute to more equitable, effective, and patient-centred healthcare.

Activities

The project was implemented through a set of management, preparation, implementation, piloting, and dissemination activities. Management activities ensured effective and on-time coordination and quality assurance through meetings, internal monitoring, and collaboration among partners. Preparation and implementation activities focused on developing the project outputs. These activities included reviews of the literature and a European survey of healthcare professionals to extract evidence to inform the creation of evidence-based learning materials, clinical recommendations, and a structured syllabus. A dedicated web app was developed to host educational content, assessments, and interactive learning tools. Piloting activities tested and refined the outputs in real educational contexts through Summer Schools and trial semesters within the HE partners. During piloting and dissemination activities, feedback from students, professionals, and external experts was collected and used to improve the final versions. Dissemination activities aimed to maximise visibility and uptake of results through PANACEA Days, online and in-person events, digital communication channels, and a Final Conference involving academic and clinical stakeholders.

Impact

PANACEA produced several concrete, innovative, and transferable outputs: the PANACEA learning materials structured in eight evidence-based modules, including text, illustrative images, mind maps, presentation files and a glossary; the PANACEA syllabus, an evidence-based curricular blueprint that organizes learning across three domains (Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes); the PANACEA clinical recommendations, to help practitioners optimise placebo effects, mitigate nocebo effects, and communicate about expectations, risks, and treatment rationale without compromising transparency or informed consent; and the PANACEA web app, a browser-based learning environment that delivers the PANACEA resources to both healthcare students and professionals. The resources were piloted and positively evaluated by students, educators, clinicians, and external experts, demonstrating high levels of satisfaction, relevance, and usability. The project also achieved broad dissemination through conferences, PANACEA Days, social media, a public website, and a final international conference. Together, these results provide sustainable, open-access educational tools that have been formally adopted and are now actively used within the partner universities.
