▶Objectives
The main objective of this project is to integrate social dimensions into agri-climate change adaptations on local level. Climate change is already and will progressively impact people's daily lives in terms of work and livelihoods, health, housing, water, food security and nutrition. This project aims to involve the farmers from the local communities in the identification of the climate change problems and the decision making processes for the adaptation to climate changes. The social involvement of the farmers ensures that the production of the climate change adaptation measures is based on the real needs of the farmers. People from rural areas are projected to bear the brunt of the effects more, partly because they are more reliant on the very natural resources threatened by climate change, and partly because they have less power to protect themselves, adapt, or recover losses. Effective policies and actions to address these impacts and reduce greenhouse gas emissions will mostly rely on the transformation of social and economic connections that contribute to their vulnerability.
▶Activities
The main activities in this project were: Assessment of the Initial Social Impact: - Conducted a thorough evaluation to determine and manage the intended and unintended social consequences of climate change on agriculture at the municipal level. Development of a Prototype Municipal Strategy: - Designed a Municipal Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation Measures in Agriculture to enhance local resilience by improving preparedness and response capabilities. Creation of an Integration Guideline: - Developed a Guideline to incorporate social dimensions into agri-climate change adaptation planning and decision-making processes at the municipal level. Reduction of Barriers to Farmer Involvement: - Addressed barriers and constraints hindering farmers' participation in adaptation processes by creating an educational course. - Implemented training activities aimed at increasing climate literacy, enhancing social capital, and fostering community cohesion to support engagement in adaptation measures. These activities were central to achieving the project’s objectives of increasing climate resilience in agriculture and fostering sustainable practices at the municipal and community levels.
▶Impact
The concrete outputs and results of the project were as follows: 1. Assessment of Initial Social Impact Report: A comprehensive report identifying and analyzing the social consequences of climate change on agriculture at the municipal level. This report provided actionable insights to guide decision-making and adaptation measures. 2. Prototype Municipal Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation in Agriculture: A detailed strategy document aimed at improving the preparedness and resilience of municipalities to climate change impacts on agriculture. This strategy serves as a model for local authorities to implement tailored adaptation measures. 3. Integration Guideline for Municipal Planning: A practical guideline outlining steps to integrate social dimensions and climate change adaptation policies into municipal planning and decision-making processes. Educational Course for Farmers: Development and delivery of a course designed to increase farmers' climate literacy, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to adopt sustainable agricultural practices and adapt to climate change. Piloted and delivered the training course to 10 farmers from the Municipality of Rosoman.
