Objectives

By implementing the INSPIRE project, we aimed to equip the consortium partners and key stakeholders with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to effectively implement socially and economically sustainable detention houses within a Restorative City. The project focused on 3 core objectives: 1. Understanding the role of a detention house within a restorative city. 2. Exploring the 'ecosystem' that supports the implementation of a detention house. 3. Investigating the connection between detention houses and social enterprises. We aimed to produce concrete results such as readers, best practices, trainings and visual materials that make the knowledge gained easily accessible to all relevant stakeholders. These resources, along with a learning platform in the form of a website, will guide the implementation process and create sustainable changes in detention systems across Europe. The project also refined and validated knowledge through interdisciplinary exchanges, ensuring that the results are transferable and reusable in different European contexts. Ultimately, by disseminating these outcomes through a 'train-the-trainer' initiative, we envisioned a shift towards a more inclusive, safe, and sustainable society.

Activities

The INSPIRE project was structured around five work packages (WPs), each designed to contribute to the overarching goal of promoting socially and economically sustainable detention houses within a restorative ecosystem. WP 1 was about coordination of the project. WP 2 focused on the role of a detention house within a restorative city, examining existing detention houses across Europe and assessed their alignment with restorative justice principles. The findings were shared in a reader that was used for the training. WP 3 explored the 'ecosystem' that supports the implementation of a detention house. Partners visited detention houses across Europe to understand how they operate in different national, legal, and cultural contexts. WP 4 investigated the connection between detention houses and social enterprises. Partners mapped existing social enterprises linked to detention houses across Europe. WP 5 focused on communication and dissemination. As part of the communication plan, we created a podcast of which the episodes will be launched in 2025 and posted information on social media. All products developed during the INSPIRE project can be found on the website https://ecosystem.rescaled.org/

Impact

The INSPIRE project produced several concrete outputs and results that contributed to the implementation of socially and economically sustainable detention houses within a Restorative City. 1. Interactive Toolkit: accessible via https://ecosystem.rescaled.org that guides the implementation of detention houses. 2. Animated Case Study Videos: Three animated videos showcasing key aspects of detention houses. 3. Three detailed readers on (1)detention houses within restorative cities, (2)the ecosystem of detention houses, and (3)their link to social enterprises. Including infographics that visualize the relationships between detention houses, Restorative Cities, and social enterprises. 4. Reports on Best Practices: These reports were based on field visits, case studies, and partner collaborations. 5. A Train-the-Trainer Program: A training designed to disseminate the project’s knowledge and best practices in a sustainable manner, equipping stakeholders with the skills to implement the learnings in their own contexts. 6. Twelve blogposts for the INSPIRE projects (related to the Ecosystem Perspective, Lived-Experience, Restorative Cities and Social Enterprises 7. Seven podcast episodes
