Objectives

The main objective of the project was to reconnect children with nature by nurturing their Nature Intelligence (NQ)—a multidimensional concept that includes emotional, cognitive, and spiritual connection to the natural world. We aimed to develop a nature-based pedagogical vision and practical tools to integrate NQ into formal school education. Specifically, the project sought to (1) adapt the existing NQ competency framework for use with schoolchildren, (2) co-create and test an NQ-inspired pedagogy, and (3) support schools in embedding NQ into their curriculum through collaborative action research. By doing so, we aimed to improve the quality and inclusiveness of school education, promote children’s well-being, and foster sustainable values and behaviors from an early age. The project also aimed to empower teachers with training and resources to support this approach and promote long-term, systemic change across European schools.

Activities

The project was implemented through four work packages. WP1 focused on project management, including monthly coordination meetings, two transnational partner meetings (Portugal and Italy), and a teacher training course in the Netherlands. Regular monitoring, evaluations, and clear task distribution ensured smooth cooperation. WP2 involved adapting the existing Nature Intelligence (NQ) competency framework for schoolchildren through a literature review, focus groups, and the development and validation of two NQ child tests (available in EN, NL, DE, PT and IT). WP3 focused on co-creating an NQ-inspired pedagogical vision, including a tool box, resulting in a 130+ page guide and pilot training sessions (available in the same five languages). WP4 centered on implementation through collaborative action research and Communities of Practice in each country, where schools developed and tested tailored NQ programs. Dissemination was ongoing, including blog posts, national multiplier events, and a two-week webinar series. All results were shared openly under a Creative Commons license to ensure public access and long-term use.
