Summary

The YOUAREIN project (“YOUng AgRifood European Innovators”) was created to strengthen entrepreneurial, innovation, and sustainability skills among students and young professionals in the agri-food sector. Universities and organisations across Europe recognised that traditional higher education linked to the food sector are often lacking practical, interdisciplinary, and sustainability-oriented training and there are too theoretical as well as insufficiently connected to real market dynamics. Academic programmes tend to focus on technical knowledge while overlooking entrepreneurial competences essential in today’s fast-changing agro-food industry. To address this, the consortium developed innovative educational materials and methodologies that integrate entrepreneurial and sustainability-oriented learning into the state of the art knowledge. The project promotes practical, interdisciplinary training through experiential learning and business gaming, fostering creativity, business acumen, and environmental responsibility. Our goal is to equip students not only with solid technical foundations but also with the mindset, creativity, and business acumen required to become active innovators and entrepreneurs in the food sector.

Objectives

The YOUAREIN project aimed to innovate university education in the agri-food sector by integrating a sustainable entrepreneurship approach into existing curricula. The project sought to equip students and graduates with the entrepreneurial, innovation, and sustainability skills needed to create and manage environmentally, socially, and economically responsible businesses. Our aims were to: - support students through training that combines theory, practice, teamwork, and collaboration with the food industry, enhancing their ability to turn ideas into viable business models. - strengthen lecturers’ competences and provide new, ready-to-use teaching materials and methodologies focused on sustainability and entrepreneurship in the agri-food field. - improve teaching methodologies by introducing experiential learning and Business Game, to simulate real business challenges. - foster international collaboration and cultural exchange among students and professors from diverse backgrounds, reflecting the global nature of the agri-food sector. Through these goals, YOUAREIN aimed to modernise agri-food education, bridge the gap between academia and industry, and cultivate a new generation of innovative entrepreneurs.

Activities

The project was implemented through five interconnected work packages. The work packages combine project management and coordination (WP1) with the development of a full communication, dissemination, and exploitation plan, alongside the project’s website and social media (WP2). The consortium jointly created the YOUAREIN Online Course Syllabus, methodological guidelines, and teaching materials on sustainable agri-food entrepreneurship. A technical workshop trained partners on producing digital content for the online platform (WP 3). Over 120 hours of video lessons were recorded and edited, then uploaded to a dedicated e-learning platform hosting on-demand courses (WP4). A Business Game was implemented as a live, interactive online event, where participants worked in teams to develop solutions for real agri-food challenges, applying the knowledge gained through the training modules. This program allowed students to apply entrepreneurial skills to real sustainability challenges in the food sector, promoting learning-by-doing and cross-country collaboration. The project also included stakeholder interviews with entrepreneurs and managers from the agri-food industry, which were recorded and integrated into the platform (WP 5).

Impact

The main intellectual output is the YOUAREIN Online Training Platform, offering four interactive e-learning modules on sustainable entrepreneurship in the agri-food sector, featuring over 120 hours of video lessons; a repository of interviews with managers and entrepreneurs, which were uploaded to the platform, enriching the learning experience with real-life examples; and a methodological guide and syllabus for universities to use the recording in their activities and replicate the learning model. The YOUAREIN Business Game served as both a final pedagogical tool and a validation of the training approach, engaging students from multiple countries in the practical creation of businesses and problem-solving of food businesses. The project’s outputs enriched higher education with ready-to-use teaching resources, innovative methodologies, and digital tools to foster sustainability-oriented entrepreneurship. Long-term educational resources were created that will continue to support students, professors, and young professionals in developing sustainable and innovative business ideas. Results are freely accessible online, ensuring lasting impact and replication across European universities, and can be used in industry networks.
