Mitigating climate change transition risks of the construction sector through building capacity in sustainable building materials

We applied for this project to address critical needs within the vocational education and training (VET) sector and the construction industry, particularly the need to promote sustainable practices and materials in response to environmental challenges. The construction industry, a major contributor to global emissions, faces increasing pressure to adopt eco-friendly methods and materials. Simultaneously, the VET sector must adapt its curricula to equip future professionals with the skills required to meet these demands. The project responded to several identified needs: bridging knowledge gaps - many VET providers lacked comprehensive, up-to-date training materials on sustainable construction techniques and materials; upskilling the workforce - construction companies expressed a need for trained professionals who understand and can implement sustainable practices; fostering collaboration - there was a lack of platforms connecting VET providers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers to align educational outcomes with industry requirements; addressing climate goals - aligning with EU sustainability targets, the project aimed to support the transition to greener economies by embedding sustainability into VET systems.

By implementing the project, we aimed to achieve the following: enhance VET quality - develop and integrate innovative, modular curricula and training materials focused on sustainable building materials and practices, ensuring VET programs are aligned with modern industry needs and sustainability standards; support green skills development - equip learners and professionals with the skills, knowledge, and competencies required to adopt sustainable construction techniques, contributing to the transition to a low-carbon economy; foster industry-VET collaboration - create strong partnerships between vocational education providers, construction companies, and policymakers to ensure alignment between educational outcomes and labor market demands; promote sustainability awareness among stakeholders about the importance of sustainable building practices and the benefits of adopting eco-friendly materials and methods; create accessible resources through an open-access e-learning platform and other tangible deliverables that can be used by stakeholders across Europe and beyond to disseminate knowledge and encourage widespread adoption of sustainable practices.
